Whoa, I'd get a second opinion. You said part of your sigmoid and that's important info. But I'm sitting here typing with 90% of my sigmoid gone - forever - due to cancer. I have never been the same since, the sigmoid is important, it acts as a reservoir holding back stool and collecting it through out your day and has the ability to swell. With mine gone, my pulled down colon is narrow and I cannot hold stool for very long. 30 minutes. Consequently I go many times through out my day but I am also a rare situation, due to my tumor being located barely inside. I do understand why they took my sigmoid but as I've stated I have never been the same since then. 13 years ago.
We are not experts by any means and if you are in danger of a perforation, then it sounds urgent but if it's just a part of your sigmoid your surgeon feels that you can do w/o, and live a normal lifestyle and eat regularly, then fine but if having this part of your GI tract removed will forever change your life, get a second opinion.
I had no idea how important the sigmoid is for normal 1 or 2 bm's per day bowel habits. I was clueless.
What would I have done prior to my resection? Obtained a second opinion and looked at several surgical approaches. One a J-pouch or a permanent colostomy.
