Amitriptylene for IBS and Weight Gain

I was diagnosed with IBS about one year ago. I was prescribed dicyclomine and amitryptoline (50 mg/day). I have also been taking lexapro and wellbutrin XL for a number of years (>5 years).

The combination of amitryptoline and dicyclomine have helped my IBS a lot. They do really dry out my mouth. I have also gained between 40 and 50 lbs in the last year as well.

I contacted the PA for the doctor prescribing the lexapro and wellbutrin XL and she said the weight gain was more than likely caused by the amitryptoline. I also contacted my GI doctor and he said the amitryptoline isn't likely to be the cause and to contact the doctor who prescribed the lexapro and wellbutrin.

I see that amitryptoline is known to cause weight gain, at least when used for depression. I have been taking the lexapro and wellbutrin for a long time and weight was never an issue.

I know a number of years ago I gained a lot of weight and switched from celexa to geodon and without much effort I my part I lost the weight I had gained.

Also many years ago I was taking tricyclic anti-depressants and I gained a lot of weight then too.

Does anyone have any experiences with weight gain due to this sort of IBS treatment and/or have any suggestions on this or the best way to proceed when two doctors are pointing their fingers at the other.

I also take the amitriptyline right before bed. Sometimes I am very groggy and sort of half sleeping/dreaming for a couple hours after I wake up.

The lexapro and wellbutrin are for depression. The amitriptylene is for the IBS. Wellbutrin is sort of different from the tricyclics and the SSRIs. It would be more likely to cause weight loss. Some people complain it makes the to jumpy, but, the XL is an extended release form.

I had been on the wellbutrin and the lexapro and had the IBS. Since adding the ami, the IBS is better, but, I've gained weight and it takes me a long time to wake up in the morning.
