Okay so forgive me this is going to be kind of long, but there's a lot to my story. But any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I have had stomach problems ever since I can remember. It started when I had to have my gallbladder out 2 weeks after my 14th birthday..which was supposed to solve my problems BUT never did. I continued to have diarrhea much more than a normal person ever would, and it escalated when I was 18.
I saw my first gastroenterologist when I was 18 after my PCP suggested I get a colonoscopy done. I went to my PCP with SEVERE diarrhea (10-15x a day), fever-ish, some joint pains, and terrible stomach pain..especially after eating. My colonoscopy came back normal and that gastroenterologist diagnosed me with IBS and sent me on my way. He prescribed me hyoscyamine (sp?) but it didn't work and he didn't try or suggest anything else.
In between then and now, things have gotten a little better but no where near "normal". I have diarrhea maybe 5x a day (a good day for me), but now I sometimes have constipation too. But the stomach pain has remained pretty constant. I have times where I'll have severe bouts of diarrhea and fevers for a few weeks to a couple months and then it lets up a little, but I have not felt "normal" for at least 4 years.
In November 2012 I had been having severe diarrhea, constipation, blood actually IN my stool, fevers, joint pain for a while so I went back to my PCP and he suggested another colonoscopy with a different gastroenterologist. My colonoscopy again came back normal, with only small internal hemorrhoids. When I went to my follow-up appointment he ordered me to have a bunch of tests done (bloodwork, gluten allergy test, lactose intolerance test and small bowel xray). He said he isn't sure if the diagnosis of IBS still stands due to me having fevers and some joint pain, but wanted to try to rule anything out. He mentioned a slight possibility of Crohn's disease. My bloodwork showed I am borderline anemic (which has never been an issue for me before), I have no gluten allergy and my lactose test came back normal. I have a follow up appointment with my gastroenterologist soon to go over my small bowel xray. Over the past month my joint pains in my knees have gotten so bad at times I want to cry (I am only 21 years old!), especially when I wake up in the morning. Sometimes my stomach pain and diarrhea is so bad I wish I could just sleep for days/weeks til it goes away. I can hardly even go to the bathroom without crying because it is so painful, which is definitely beyond hemorrhoid pain. My gastro wanted me to get an MRI of my rectum done but I can't afford it after just having the small bowel xray. Some days I can't make it to work or class because I'm in so much pain. I am at a loss because I will be heartbroken if my gastro passes this off like the last one did. I am about
to graduate college & I won't be able to miss work all the time at a "real job" if these problems keep persisting the way they are. Please help!
