I hope to make this as short as possible...
My daughter (now 21 1/2 yrs old) got food poisoning on Aug 8 2011. Severe stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea,
several visits to doctor with antibiotics, steroid shots and several ER visits
for a 2 week period. Started to get a
little better, then it started again but with severe constipation. First like 3x a week then slowly until it was
every day. Went to a GI doctor in the meantime
(mid Sept), did a colonoscopy, endoscopy and was told IBS. Went gluten free, lactose free and tried an
IBS diet, nothing seemed to help - it really didn't matter what she ate. She couldn't even get off the couch she was
sick 24/7. This still continued thru mid
Dec. Symptoms worse - with extreme hot flashes and ear aches now added to the
symptoms. She lost 1/4 her body weight, started losing
her hair. Had another GI Dr appt with a
new Dr. He said he didn't think it was
IBS, so he ran tests - no to Celiac - No to Chrohns, stools tests, barium test
for small intestine function. - he still said not IBS and sent her to a GI Dr
at a teaching hospital that would be able to tests for more things. This Dr also said no to IBS, so she was
running tests. My daughter went in the
hospital for 9 days on Feb 2, 2012.
Another colonoscopy - tests every day, stool tests, urine, blood, more
barium, x-rays, MRI. Two GI Drs that saw
her in the hospital said it was IBS she would have to learn to live with it. (her Dr was not on call at the hospital when
my daughter was there - she was out of town).
(This just goes to show you the different opinions doctors have, even in the same office!) Went to Dr after hospital - Dr said if she can't get more calories in
her she would put a feeding tube in. (She
was living on chicken, green beans, plain rice and applesauce and Ensure -
Ensure kept her alive) Her Dr said she
wanted to do a partial colonoscopy in the office if nothing showed on biopsies
then she would do another full colonoscopy.
nothing showed - full colonoscopy on March 2, 2012 - found a Parasite ! Dr wasn't sure what kind - treated her with
different meds over the next 2 months on and off (2 types - 3 days each - one
type was taken twice). She felt really
good, after the last one, for about 3 weeks.
I didn't believe parasite was gone, had doctor do 6 day stool sample,
nothing showed up. Then she had her
period and right back to nausea, stomach cramps, ect.. (never had problems with her period before). (I do thank God everyday for this GI Dr - if it wasn't for her, I don't just don't know).
Today her symptoms come and sometimes go. She is usually fine in the morning and then
once she eats she slowly starts feeling bad - cramp, nausea and constipation. She was last year diagnosed with SIBO -
treated, really didn't feel any different.
She has since been diagnosed with Many yeast in her stool and put on Nystatin. Became severally constipated, cramping
bloated, nausea so she went off it. Her
GI doctor last year prescribed her Florstor, but only because I asked for a
probiotic - the Dr didn't believe in them
They didn't help at the time. probably because of the parasite. Took her to a holistic Dr and he prescribed
a probiotic that has 40 billion in it - I had her take Culturelle first for a
week and then she took one of the Dr's but it made her cramp, indigestion and
pooped 3x's.
So I guess I don't know what to do. Parasite - No Parastie - IBS no IBS - (I do think and pray the parastie is gone, because even though she isn't 100% she is still 10,000 x better than one year ago). I know probiotics are good - but which one -
try the Florstor - stick with the 40 billion one, try a new one, what?
And when and how to take?
I have lost all faith in Dr's and I am tired of trying to
play Dr myself.
