Just in the past year or so I've been having several issues. If anything goes on with my stomach I have horrible cramps. Sometimes I can eat and be perfectly fine and 15-30 minutes later I'm in the bathroom on the toilet hunched over in pain with diarrhea. I can go a week or so and have no problems and then out of no where I'll be living off of Tylenol and Imodium for 2 or 3 days. It's horrible it's to the point where I can't go out to eat dinner with my husband anymore in fear of not getting home before the symptoms start.

I've spoken to my doctor on numerous occasions and he just seems to ride it off. I have hypothyroidism and he seems to try to blame most of my health issues on that.

Do you having IBS have these types of symptoms or are these in a league all their own? I just want to find out some info to bring up to him. What are the ways a doctor goes about diagnosing IBS?

Sounds like IBS. Why don't you write down everything you eat for a few weeks? Maybe you'll see a pattern between diarrhea and what you eat. Typically you're diagnosed with ibs by your doctor eliminating other conditions. It's also diagnosed by your symptoms.

I've found that you really have to be your own advocate when it comes to getting answers for problems. I think its usefully to not only talk to your doctor about your symptoms but also about how they are impacting your life.

In this case, maybe take some time to explain to your doctor that this issue is really so bad that its keeping you from going out to eat, etc. and ask if they can refer you to a GI specialist. A GI doctor has been the only way I have been able to make any headway on my stomach issues.

Hypothyroidism and gastro issues often go hand in hand. Have you tried going gluten-free? I have had IBS-type issues over the years and going GF has definitely helped. I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism/Hashi's last year. From what I have read, going GF is highly recommended. My doctor didn't recommend that to me...I had to do my own research and after going GF realized I felt SO much better. I also found I was sensitive to foods containing yeast or versions thereof.
