Shapeless stools for 1.5+ years - Is this IBS...?

Hi,

I am 35 and I used to have normal bowel movements. I started taking allopurinol for Gout and this caused my stools to become semi solid and have no shape. I was told that this happens due to allopurinol.

I have stopped allopurinol for close to 1.5+ years now and still the original form of my stools have not returned. I was not paying much attention to it. But for the last one month I am having to go atleast 4 times per day. Also I had some slight discomfort in my stomach for 4 or 5 days about 3 weeks ago. And I started having diarrea like consistency once or twice a day and I also think I can see some undigested food in the stools (like some tiny pieces of carrot or spinach leaves, etc.)

I became very concerned and consulted a Gastro today and he recommended to get a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy performed. I am scheduled for both the procedures on this Friday. I have completely lost my peace of mind, and I am worrying constantly about what this could be? Has somebody had similar symptoms? Is this IBS or do I have something more serious :(

After reading a lot about colonoscopy I am thinking if I agreed to get it done too quickly.

I am going to try talking to the doctor to see if there are other tests he can do to find out what I am having before doing a colonoscopy. Can somebody give me some advice if that is a good idea to run some initial tests before doing a Colonoscopy considering that I have been having loose stools for close to 1.5 years? I am just terrified of the possibilities of perforation and potential infection with colonoscopy and wonder if the risk is worth the trouble as my problems are really mild compared to some of the people here!
