I am 70 years old and have suffered from IBS (UC and UP) since I was about 40 years old. Much of this time my symptoms have been in remission. In 2005 I had a major flare-up, bleeding, bad stools, etc. A colonoscopy revealed polyps and inflammation. Since then, I have been on medication (Asacol and other forms of mesalamine). I did pretty well until last year then another major flare-up. I was never able to control that with my medications. My GI doctor added Canasa to my medication list. Still had problems in spite of all the medications. The doctor had nothing to add other than increasing my dosage of Asacol. I was talking with my younger sister and she had talked to one of her friends who had digestive system problems and found that she had an intolerance to gluten. When she cut her intake of gluten, she felt much better. So, I thought I would give it a try. Guess what, within 24 hours of no gluten, I was completely rid of my cramping, bloating, diarrhea, bloody stools, etc. I have been on gluten-free diet for three weeks now and have never felt better in my life. If you have not tried a gluten-free diet, do it and you will know within one or two days whether or not it will fix your problem. It sure did fix mine and if it helps even one person out there, my time in posting this is well worth it.
