A specific carbohydrate diverticulitis diet is a diet design specifically to help people with Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Elaine Gottschall was instrumental in popularizing her specific carbohydrate diet in her book, Breaking the vicious cycle, after it helped her daughter recover from ulcerative colitis. Those pressing forward with a diet such as the specific carbohydrate diet must keep in mind that this diet is not a quick fix.Your body may be severely damaged from the disease and will therefore not heal overnight.Adhering to the diet for at least six months is recommended for adequate results.
How It Works? (Specific Carbohydrate Diverticulitis Diet)
Specific Carbohydrate Diverticulitis Diet
The theory of specific carbohydrate diverticulitis diet is based on the fact that carbohydrates in the form of sugar promote the growth of yeast and bacteria in the intestine and evntually causes an imbalance between the two. This result in the weakening of enzymes functioning to protect the intestinall cell surface. This leads to improper digestion and malabsorption of carbohydrates. These undigested carbohydrates will further fuel the growth of bad yeast and bacteria in the intestine. This in turn would give rise to the formation of acid and toxins that would damage the lining of the small intestine, leading to the formation of excess mucus. This is a defense mechanism. The diet was created to correct the imbalance by creating a deficiency of carbohydrates for the intestinal yeast and bacteria effectively reducing their numbers and allowing for a healthy recovery and less pain for you.
