I found the low-FODMAP diet very helpful in managing my IBS symptoms, in conjunction with avoiding spicy and fatty food, as well as stress relief/management techniques.
I trialed each FODMAP separately to determine which ones I needed to minimise in my diet. In my case, it was lactose, fructose, fructans and galactans, but not polyols.
In my case, I believe the FODMAP food intolerances were caused by untreated Celiac. Now that I've been gluten free for several months, I find I'm much better able to tolerate lactose and fructose. I haven't really trialled fructans and galactans again yet... Lots of things that contain fructans also contain gluten, and I'm not too keen on lentils...
