To expand on Pb's explanation - I have both IBS and IBD. My IBS symptoms: extreme bloating, increased mucous output, lower abdominal cramping before a bm which is relieved upon going, loose movements especially after eating foods that don't agree with me and urgency.
My IBD symptoms while flaring - limited lower left side pain - at least for me - (think of someone constantly shoving a knife into your side), excruciating pain while having a bm, bleeding like a stuck pig *pardon the graphics*, extreme fatigue, horrible gut spasms.
Treatments for IBS like stated is diet modification, stress reduction and if one is having bad D, usually Imodium or increased fiber can help. If C is the issue, Linzess can help ease that.
With IBD, there is a wide array of medications that are available to reduce inflammation to suppressing the immune system.
