Effexor/venlafaxine for IBS

Hi all,

I've been an IBS sufferer for about 8 years. My symptoms are gut sensitivity and a lot of nausea. It can be really crippling and has made my life miserable!

I went to see a specialist recently and he said to take effexor (venlafaxine) and that this was his preferred medication for IBS sufferers.

Has it worked for anyone else? How long does it take to work? (I've only been taking it for 2 days).

Hi Jimmy & welcome to Healing Well. I did a search here at the forum about Effexor & IBS & found some very old threads. The posts I read all said they had very good success with it. I did not find anything indicating how long it took to kick in & work. But, I can tell you this, 2 days is not near long enough to know if it is going to help. Many medications have to get in the system real good before they become effective. I think you could call the drs office & speak to the nurse. If she doesn't know she can certainly ask the dr on your behalf. Effexor is used off label for many different things. Hang in there.
