Well, I have finally got some relief from the constipation. I'm in a lot of pain though. From the bearing down and straining to get everything out has left all my abdominal and back muscles sore. It's still hard to pass, it feels like I'm giving birth! The Miralax is helping move everything, but it's not making the stools any softer. Don't know if I should stick with that or try Colace? Any advice?

What about
an OTC stool softener?
Be careful when straining, you don't want to get hemmies.

Watch taking too much laxative or softener too. Don't overdo it.

More like watch you don't poop your pants. I took ONE Correctol when I was in college because I had gotten constipated and the next morning I was sitting at my computer (thankfully in my room, alone) when I went to poot and poop came out instead! I never have trusted laxatives since then.
I think the general consensus around here for non-chemical laxatives are prunes/prune juice and aloe vera juice/pills. I don't know that there would be any harm in taking either of those things along with your prescript
ion (ask a pharmacist or doctor, though, to make sure). Obviously if you get TOO regular on both things, then stop the aloe vera or prunes and stick with your prescript
ion.
And I know how you are feeling. I got so bad constipated when I was on my diet last summer that I strained and strained and strained and when I finally got my stool to pass, I ended up having to go home from work because I hurt so bad. I was still sore the next day. I've decided that it's better to not strain to pass something and just take a laxative and give it time to work. Of course I'm used to being able to pass my stools and I'm used to laxatives working, so that may not be a good game plan for you.

Cheleted Magnesium in high doses helps with constipation as well as for your muscles.

Please be careful with the straining. While hemmies are a problem with straining too much, you also run the risk of rectal prolapse which is something you do not want. I agree with Lil, look for an OTC stool softener (not laxative) to see if it helps you at all. Are you able to stomach olive oil? I have had to eat a spoonfull of olive oil on occasion to help ease the stools through.
