Des, Thank you for posting this.  I was reading an article on the aggressive chemotherapy treatment for Ovarian Cancer they are pushing and the symptoms for advanced OC about knocked me over. Kind of scary, don't you think?  I wonder how many women are actually misdiagnosed.

Ovarian cancer is so awful b/c of it's lack of definitive symptoms. I've known two women with it (both fine now) but the main symptom they both exhibited was an unusually swollen stomach. I think that's one of the more reliable symptoms of an ovary related problem, not just cancer but cysts also.

My aunt had it. She's a nurse, so she's probably more intune with symptoms and causes than other people. I'm not sure what her symptoms were, but I know they were realitively mild (to have cancer, that is). She saw her gyn who felt suspicious, and he sent her for some tests and they found it. She had surgery immediately and they were able to do a complete hysterectomy on her and luckily it was just in one ovary and hadn't spread anywhere. The surgeon told her afterwards that had she and her gyn acted when they did, it would have spread; her ovary was just swollen to bursting with cancer.

How do they find it? Ultrasound or blood test?

I understand the CA-125 (blood test) is not the most reliable of tests...it can create false positives and negatives and if you have endometriosis, it can create false positives as well. I'm not sure if a regular ultrasound would pick it up, perhaps a trans-vaginal one would.

Still scary to me...
