gall bladder removal and diarrhea

I have a family member who had his gall bladder removed and is now suffering from diarrhea. He had a blood test and stool sample that showed no parasites. Any input? He's going back to the dr who is not a gastro dr. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Miss Prim & welcome to Healing Well. Diarrhea is a common thing after having a gall bladder taken out. Sometimes it can take up to 6 weeks for the diarrhea to stop. Has your brother tried anything over the counter? The diarrhea is caused by bile salts. My dr put me on a medication called Cholestermyrne. I think I spelled that wrong. Another medication is Welchol. These bind up the bile salts & stops the diarrhea. Your brother needs to contact his surgeon about this.

Two close relative have had their gall bladders removed, and all of them must stay on a very low-fat diet to avoid diarrhea and cramping. Maybe he is ingesting more fats than his body can handle now?

Hope he finds some relief.

It really depends on the individual. I had my gallbladder removed many years ago and have never had to adjust my eating habits! But a friend of mine can't eat any cheese or fried food at all without having issues. I'd definitely say the first few weeks can be different than how things turn out long term - I'd say avoid the fatty foods and talk to the Dr.

I had my gall bladder out in 1996 and always had a poop problem. The Dr gave me colestipol 1gm it does bind up the bile and I don't have diarrhea. A month ago the Dr wanted me to schedule a colonoscopy . I agreed on colarguard it came back normal. The gastro a.b.n. Still wants a colonoscopy and I haven't made up my mind. I'm the meantime she wants a colon cleanse. Any thoughts

Hi Christine, the cologuard testing is not as definitive as a colonoscopy. The dr can get a visual of the insides, look for structural changes & check for polyps. The scope is easy, it's the prep that some people don't like.
