I recently had a nasty, lengthy flare-up of IBS-D and saw a gastroenterologist. She prescribed Questran, which I have been taking for over a week. I take a small amount twice a day.
Generally, it really seems to help. Not perfect, but definitely better. I am also watching my diet, of course. Things are much more settled and I don't find myself running to the bathroom several times a day.
However, I'm concerned about a few things. First, from what I've researched, it sounds like the Questran (Cholestyramine) fiber can sometimes cause tooth erosion. Because of that, I drink it through a straw, after dissolving well in water. I also make sure I regularly brush my teeth.
Perhaps more of a concern to me is that it's not something more natural.
I searched online and found Heather's acacia fiber powder. It's organic and natural, from what they say. Has anyone tried this, either after trying Questran (or something similar) and was it successful for your IBS-D? Anything else I should know about that?
I also noticed that Swanson Vitamins has organic acacia fiber powder, which I think, is the same as what Heather offers(?) Or is there any difference?
Just checking this out. I'm okay with the Questran, but I know some people have developed issues with heartburn or related issues. Having had a very nasty bout of gastritis once, I want to avoid anything like that. I did bring up this concern to my gastro doctor, who suggested taking something OTC should I develop heartburn or related, but I'm not totally okay with that.
Also, is there anything OTC available to take besides a powder if one is eating away from home?
Would appreciate any input, experiences, suggestions, etc. Thank you!
