My friend with Crohn's started having problems after many years and landed almost dead in hospital for 30 days. She lost 30 lbs in that length of time. She was here visiting this week and said she is finally pain free and that Remicade is what did it and they are using it for things other than arthritis now. She said it has changed her life. Just thought I would pass it along. I know most of you don't have Crohn's and actually her did not show up with tests but she was DX'd many years ago with it but was really sick before they gave it to the fact that it was a severe Crohn's attack.

I've heard Remicade works wonders too... But I also heard it isn't for long term, and that you can build up a tolerance for it.

Is it some sort of anti-inflammatory?

BRAND NAME: Remicade

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Infliximab is an injectable antibody that blocks the effects of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). There are two other injectable drugs that block TNF alpha--infliximab (Remicade) and etanercept (Enbrel). is a substance made by cells of the body which has an important role in promoting inflammation. Specifically, infliximab is used for treating the inflammation of Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. By blocking the action of TNF-alpha, infliximab reduces the signs and symptoms of inflammation. Infliximab does not cure Crohn's disease, psoriatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis; however, preliminary studies have demonstrated that infliximab can retard the destruction of joints by rheumatoid arthritis.

Ya, and not everyone's a candidate for it even if they have IBD (they are starting to use if for UCers as well) and it can have some nasty side-effects, but for some it does wonders, but usually only for so long, still, better then nothing for sure...it would just be nice if they could make a drug specifically for us IBDers (and IBSers for that fact) instead of using all these cross-over drugs that are actually for cancer and arthritis and stuff...guess if they made a drug like that it might be a cure...keeping fingers crossed.

The medicine I take for my excess bile--Welchol--it's a cholesterol medicine.  Just goes to show you how much things affect the bowels.

You are so right pb4... I take Sulfazine that is for arthritis and ulcerative colitis. Its kind of good for me though since I have both arthritis and UC. Taking less meds is a good thing for me, I feel like a walking pharmacy already :)
