Is IBS possible with large intestines removed?

I had a colectomy 7 years ago (had 7/8 of my colon removed because of colonic inertia). I've had all the tests to rule out other diseases so my doctor says I must have IBS. Changing my diet has helped some but is it possible to have IBS in my situation? I haven't had a lot of trouble with d or c since my surgery but my main problem has been abdominal pain, severe tenderness in that area, and I haven't been able to wear anything around my stomach or waist for the past month or more. I do know my stomach ache started after a week of unexplained diarrhea about four months ago. Please advise, thanks!

You may have developed certain intolerances from foods however its hard to know. You should really see your doctor and confirm what is going on. If you developed Crohn's or something like that, your surgery would not have cured it and Crohn's develops mostly in the terminal ileum which sounds like you still have that part. It's better to rule out everything before assuming IBS just to make sure you don't have something more sinister going on. You might want to raise this question in the Healing Well's ostomy forum to see if anyone else has had this problem also. Good luck.
