Chills with flairup

Does anyone else get chills ( no fever) with a flairup? My dr says it's from the Vagas nerve which runs through the digestive system. I also get left sided pain in the lower abd. on occasion with a flairup.My problem is more toward constipation although I manage to go at least to some extent every day I sure have gas and bloating  recent colonoscopy shows IBS and some small divitculitos ( no big deal) but it sure effects my quality of life.    Merri yeah

I used to get very chilled when I had a gall bladder attack, namely right after I had a bowel movement (more like a gastric dump). I never heard an explanation for it--I just thought it had something to do with the pain. But maybe it was related to my sudden and somewhat explosive bowl movement.

Seems like I'm not the only person that gets the odd chill. Thank you for sharing that info as I was getting quite concerned about those chills. My gasostrophy also showed diverticultos.

My doc has given me anti depressants for the problem. I don't understand how these will help as I am not suffering depression. I will ask him to explain when I see him next.

My family dr recommmended trying Lexapro for the same thing. I took one and felt awful so I didn't take any more. I do have a rx for Valium 5 mg and from time to time I take 1/2 which seems to help as much as Bentyl. Antidepressents are the new wonder tx for IBS I think. My gastro dr didn't say anything about taking them. The usual dose of Bentyl is 20 mg buy I have 10 mg . I wanted to take as little medication as possible. I find that the 10 does as much good most of the time as 20. If 10 isn't going to work it's a sign that it will be a worse day than usual with belly aches. It seems to me that any stress or depression is the result of IBS rather than the cause. My problems started in full force after I got my gall bladder out.   Merri

i also get the odd sudden chill and then the gurgles noises

then i know i am in for it!!!

i had this tonight from the flagyl they put me back on today, in two hours time i had 5 days worth saved up all realeased at once......a big D flare, oh gosh i know now for the next week i am going to be a mess from the meds....my doc says to me today if this doesnt clear you up after this pat 1.5 yearand half on Flagyl, theni am going to order stool samples on parasites, etc....

In addition to IBS I have Mitral Valve Prolapse and recently was told a coulpe of very small nodules on my Thyroid. Apparently, this has nothing to do with chills as nobody is impressed: not the cardiologist, or the gastro which each received a copy of the sono. I guess that makes it undesputed in favor of the Vagas nerve causing the chills. I hate them. It really doesn't feel like a fever but you can't help thinking something is wrong with you ( besides a constant search for the potty!) When it happens to me I can get them on and off for a few days before they just go away. I have been doing this for several years so if it was serious I'd know it by now. Weird!!!!!!!!! Merri

Louie, certain kinds of antidepressants have been found to help regulate bowel movements in some people and reduce gas, bloating, etc. They're using them now to treat people with IBS regardless of their mental state. They're not exactly sure why they work, except that maybe the digestive tract is a little uptight and these help calm it down and get it relaxed enough to function. Because even if you aren't anxious by nature, you guts can be overreactive to certain foods or other stresses. There's even one theory that in our nervous system there is a "brain" that runs our digestive system; our regular brain has very little to do with controlling it. And that this second "brain" can get anxious, depressed, etc. and cause malfunctions in our guts, even though our regular brain is going about its business just fine.

yes kerimom you are right thre is a big connection  between the two anxiety and stress/ anyone ever had D in waiting for news or doc appts?

i get high blood pressure going to the doc waiting anxiety will do this normally i ahve 110/70 yesterday it was 130/90 in the waiting room

I thought I might had D before my last surgery becuase I was very, very nervous. My heart rate was 140 when I checked in! I can't get my heart rate over 100 when I've been on the treadmill for a half hour, even if I've got it on incline and I'm jogging a little. I kept feeling like I might have a problem, but since I hadn't eaten anything, I didn't have anything to trigger it. If I had eaten, boy, look out!
