hi

over the last couple of weeks i have been in so much pain. i have a pain in both of my sides. it feels like i am being stabed al the time. i have been up to the accdent and emergencey department at hospital who said they are not sure what it is and that it could be ibs. i am waiting to see a speacalist for my stomach problems in just over a weeks time. they gave me very strong painkillers two lots which i find myslef clock watching so i can take them every two hours as pain is so bad. i have also been given antispasmoic tablets whcih have done nothing. i have had time of off work because of the pain and am fed up with being in pain all the time. i need some answers but noone seems to be able to give me any.

do you think this is ibs or something else?

what ever it is it is ruring my life. i want to live a normal life but it is impostible to do so when i am constancely on the toilet. this has been going on for about four months now and i have already had a total of three months of work signed of by doctor. plus i am fed up with bleeding from my back passage all the time and having so many tests done which are so personal.

Do food diary, eat baby or blended food, check out SCD, and start right away.

Oneday, I'm not too convinced you have IBS. I'm no expert though, this is just my personal opinion. Constant pain and bleeding are not indicative of IBS. For someone to rely on pain pills every couple hours on a daily basis seems to have something more going on.
All those invasive tests indeed are uncomfortable and embarrassing, and I feel for you that you have to go through it. But, they are so necessary. Hopefully they'll find your problem soon. You should be scoped, biopsied, and even MRIed. In the meantime you should probably eat an extremely low fat diet and stay away from caffiene, alcohol and carbonation as much as possible.
Maybe you could also check the UC and Crohn's forum to see if any people there have as much pain and bleeding as you do. ???

One thing I would add: I was once in your situation. I was having a very bad gall bladder attack and was popping pain pills every four hours and then staring at the clock, waiting to take another.

It never occured to me that the pain pills didn't work on me (darvocet, generic proproxy). I was prescribed the same thing after my last surgery and was taking them faithfully, only to hurt worse and worse as the sedative wore off. I got my doctor to prescribe me something else and the pain relief kicked in immediately.

If your pain medicine isn't working, be sure and tell your doctor. They may have you on too low a dose, or you may be like me and be immune to it. Several people in my mother's family have problems with getting pain medicines and sedatives to work on them (my aunt is totally immune to morphine).

Also, antispasmodics seem to be notorious for being highly specific to a person. I was put on hyoscamine and it never did one thing for me. Other people on the forum have complained about it too, but some people just love it. They either seem to work brilliantly or not at all. It's certainly a category of medicine where you need to try different brands until you find one that works for you.

Hi oneday, I have crohn's and IBS. Bleeding is not a sign of IBS but of some other problem. You should call your doctor and tell them the pain meds are not working and you are bleeding. Antispasmotic drugs do not do anything for me either. I have to have a colonoscopy every one to two years and while unplesant it is just something that I have to do. I lost all signs of humility when I had my son anyways. Hope you are feeling better soon.

i am still in so much pain today. i am taking all the pain killers that i am allowd to and still i am in so much pain. i could harly move a couple of hours ago. i still can't move that much . so much so i can't go out. i am going to see doctor tomorrow and then i may have to go up hosiptal if the pain does not calm down as i just can't take it any more. i keep getting told it is just my bowels but i am not so sure. it doesn't sound like what you are all suffering. i am not taking my anitspasmotic tablets anymore as they didn't do a thing for me and i can't the point in taking them. i have had about four blood tests which show i have abnomal liver function probably because of all the tablets i have had to take. of which none have madce me feel any better. i have had a scan of my liver and gallbladder and it all looked normal. i also had biopies done when i had the camrea up and down and again nothing was found. i really need something to help with the pain. i have been in such serve pain for three weeks now not sure how much more i can take of it.

I don't know but you should go to the hospital now. I've never heard of anyone with IBS hurting so bad; even when I had gall bladder attacks, I was able to walk around (moving made it hurt less, actually). And you certainly never bleed with IBS or a bad gall bladder, unless the blood can be positively identified as coming from hemmroids. If your liver test was abnormal, why didn't they do further investigation? It's all well and good that (I assume) an ultrasound showed no swelling or tumors, but the absence of those two things doesn't mean that everything's all right; that's why they do blood tests in the first place. Severe pain, bleeding and abnormal blood/liver tests all point to something much more serious than IBS. If you have Chron's or UC, you need to be given medicines now that will help the inflammation (and pain) subside. If you have something worse, they need to find that quickly too.

You really need to find someone who will help you and take you seriously. If you have to, go to some doctor or hospital you have never been to before and tell them that you have blood in your stools, intolerable pain that prescription pain killers just aren't touching and you have tested for abnormal liver function, but your regular doctor can't seem to figure out what's wrong with you; don't say anything about anyone ever thinking you have IBS. For one thing, you can't have bleeding and have IBS--they're mutually exclusive--and for two, *some* doctors hear "IBS" and just ignore you. If you go in with migraines from an abcessed tooth, they'll blame it on IBS. It's rather like back in the 50's and 60's when women complained about PMS or postpartem depression, and they were told that it was "all in their heads", and were given valium to treat it. Some doctors are just as dismissive of IBS.

hi

i went to see my doctor today as the pain is still very bad. he thinks that i have ibs but that is not what is causing such serve pain. he has given me some pain killers that are even stronger than what i was on. if these don't work then he said i may have to be amitted to hospital to be given some pain relef there. if the pain doesn't calm down in the next few days then i will go back. just waiting to see my speaclist about stomach although i already think i know what they will say. it's just ibs and then that will be that. i am fed up now never getting an answer.
