Has anyone tried these?  Yesterday I was in a (long & boring) meeting at work in the late afternoon.  My coworker brought these to our meeting saying it would help him not fall asleep.  He offered me some and initially I refused saying that I can't have caffeine or sugar alcohols (manitol, sorbitol, xylitol).  He read the ingredients section and said it didn't include any of my danger ingredients.  So I ate 5 jelly beans. Today I am so sick!   L   Ugh, I feel like death.  I have been up since about 4:30am PST with D, cramping, major nausea and bloating.  I have to RUN to the bathroom.  It's sickening.... I feel like I'm prepping for a scope, it's that bad. Now I don't know if it was these jelly beans or something else that is making me so ill.  My lunch yesterday consisted of a Subway sandwhich, later I had the jelly beans, and no dinner because I was already feeling a bit sick.  Maybe it's the stomach flu...?  Is that going around? So now I'm home sick today from work and I can't even sleep. Thanks for listening, I had to vent.  Update - I removed the link because I no longer think it could be them.  Probably food poisoning instead.

The stomach flu's been going around my office, so maybe it's just a timing thing.  But personally I don't trust anyone to read an ingredients label for me because they may not be aware of all the different names for things.  For instance, most people know the words "sugar alcohol", and some may even know "sorbitol", but a lot don't know all the other -itols that are bad.  And caffeine can hide in other ingredients ("made from real coffee beans").  Looking at the website for the product, it says it includes "carbohydrates" as an ingredient, but that could be made from anything, inluding sugar alcohols.  They are frequently turning up in chewable medicines, I have found, because they're better for diabetics and contribute less calories (because you know that 1 calorie fiber pill is going to make you FAT).  I've gotten to the point when I see a doctor, I list sugar alcohol as an allergy to try and avoid any accidental prescriptions of chewable meds or cough syrups with that in them.  Of course, concentrated vitamin C has given me D in the past, but I can't imagine you got enough of that from 5 beans to do you in.

Maybe it was food poisoning from the Subway.  Ugh, it sounds horrific, I can't imagine 5 jelly beans doing that to you.  How are you feeling now?  I hope you didn't go to work!

UPDATE

I think it's food poisoning... I have just gotten worse and worse by the hour.  Water is going through me like a garden hose.  I'm starting to feel dizzy and I do have a slight temp, 101.  My mom is on her way over to take me to Urgent Care.  sad    I just hope I don't have an accident on the way, or in the waiting room.  Wish me luck!

It probably is food poisoning but there is a really bad flu going around here in CA but it has other symptoms besides stomach. They say there really isn't "just a stomach flu" alone that it is usually food poisoning. I find that hard to believe remembering back when at college everyone was sick and throwing up and had eaten at different places but that is what I have heard. Let us know how you are.

So I'm home and hydrated again. Doc gave me fluids via IV, some diluted Gatorade, and an anti-D shot. They also took a stool sample and said they'd call me if they find anything. I'm not really sure what that means. Anyway, I am feeling better - but still no where near 100%. I'm hoping to finally get some sleep.

DEFINITELY SOUNDS LIKE A BUG. THEY PROBABLY TOOK THE STOOL SAMPLES TO CHECK FOR ECOLI ETC... OR PARACITES. YOU WOULD HEAR BACK PRETTY QUICKLY IF YOU DID. THEY HAVE AN ANTI-D SHOT?!!!! CAN WE BUY IT IN BULK? I WILL BE THINKING OF YOU. YOU DO SO MUCH TO HELP OTHERS ON THIS SITE. I HOPE YOU ARE FEELING BETTER SOON AND ARE ABLE TO GET SOME SLEEP.

LOL about the anti-D shot... I'm not even sure exactly how it works. I got some anti-D meds and anti-nausea meds. I'm not sure which was which because I got some via IV and another via a shot. Either way, it worked. I was able to sleep peacefully last night. We don't even know exactly what the problem was - if it was food poisoning or just a bug.

Lil, I'm glad you're feeling better.  That episode does not sound like it was much fun.  That's good they were able to give you IV fluids in the clinic; much less expensive than going to the ER!  Make sure to keep pushing the fluids for the next few days.  Rest up!

There's been so much e. coli and rotovirus going around, that many doctors are probably on the lookout for it--hence your stool test. Could have been contaminated lettuce on your sandwich. At least they've got to consider that as a possibility.

You know, all of that just grosses me out... That I could have eaten something "contaminated." Now I'm scared to eat out. I'm back to work today but I'm still intermittently getting stomach cramps that last for a couple minutes. I'll be having my homemade lunch at my desk today (and probably for the rest of the week).

Have you reported the incident to your local health department? It should be recorded that you suspect food poisioning from the Subway so that someone will go to inspect it and make sure that the employees are washing their hands, the kitchen is properly cleaned, and that the meat and other ingredients are not expired. If other people have complained, then they will know that something's wrong and launch an investigation of the restaurant and of its ingredients; that's how they've been finding all these problems with lettuce and spinach and bad meat--from people reporting their suspicions of food poisioning and the place where they ate.
