UNSURE,ANY SUGESTIONS ?

HI , I found this forum by accident really just searching for answers to my symptoms im very unsure what is going on in this body of mine if any ones any suggestions i will be very greatfull .well here goes with the symptoms very sorry but it is a bit gross - started having problems with my bowel movements in 2003 i would suffer constapation then very loose stools then came the bleeding in the stools and the cramps,doctor sent me to have a colonoscopy in nov 2003 which the results came back all clear .still had the problem on and off the next few years with some visits to the doctor regarding the problem but fogged off with its just piles or some other simple thing ,but in 2006 it was getting worse and i returned to the doctors to be given another excuse it could be tiny vains inside the rectum that have burst that is causing the bleeding its very common i was told also she noticed i had piles but i have always got piles have for years they dont bother me ,dont notice them bleeding they arent painful.

my recent problem started in dec 06 bowel movements had flared up again with lots of blood in the stool that had been going on right up untill about 2 months ago but then changed for the worst i became constipated for 7 days didnt move my bowels at all i bought over the counter laxatives for this as i have given up going to the doctor about this subject the laxatives didnt work but have on previous occasions then when i did go i couldnt stop going very very loose in the past month i have been getting mucas in my stools and also mucas without the stools the mucas has blood through it ,its clear mucas but when it comes with stool its yellowish my stools also have blood through them and covering them not lots like dripping but enough to panic me more than normal ,i now have some pain in my rectum and constantly have the feeling i need a pooh even when i dont ,i do a pooh about 6 - 10 times a day and feel as though im never quite finished and have a niggly pain at the bottom right side of tummy i have a lot of gas and also feel their is a blockage in my rectum as when doing a pooh i feel it gets pushed out to the one side and this also happens with the gas ,i have picked up the phone a few times during this last month to call for an appointment with the doc but ended up hanging up i think im embarased now as i feel ive been complaning a while now also we all know how they examin the rectum and its not nice at all at the last apointments i just had to have a mental block ,but i have made an apointment for tuesday 13 th ,im a bit worried she will fog this off again but its making me miserable previous apointments ive just accepted what the doc says but unsure if i should speak up and if i do what to say .anyway guys does my symptoms sound like ibs or not ? thanks for taking the time to read this .

It all depends on the kind of blood you have in your stools. If it's a bright red, looks fresh, then it probably is something wrong with your rectum area. Are piles another word for hemmroids? Hemmroids can bleed and even rupture on occasion, but, for the most part, this is not a big deal and they're better left alone. Unfortunately both constipation and long periods of diarrhea (sitting on the toilet puts extra pressure on your rectum and your hemmroids) make them worse. If there's any way to limit the amount of time you spend on the toilet, and yet also limit the need to strain to pass the stool, then that will help them heal. You may want to look at suppositories, which also will help them heal. The other thing that causes a lot of bright red, fresh blood is a fissure in the rectum. I am under the impression that this is like a tear in the skin. They hurt a lot worse than hemmroids, but there's not a lot you can do about them either, except try to keep from straining or sitting on the toilet for long periods of time. I think you also have to be very careful about cleaning yourself after bowel movements to avoid infections.

If the blood is not bright red, but is dark red, brown or black, then you need to definitely get another colonscopy done, even if you have to see another doctor. Blood that is darker is coming from higher up in the intestinal tract or stomach, and indiates IBD or stomach ulcers, both of which need to be treated with medicine. IBDs can sometimes be hard to find because sometimes the inflammation is a lot higher up in the intestines than the scope can see, or the intestines are in a state of remission when the scope is performed.

Mucus is common with both IBS and IBD, so in and of itself it is not very telling. All of your other symptoms could also go either way. So really it's a matter of deciding where the blood is coming from. If bright red, it's from low down and is likely as your doctor says, nothing to be alarmed about. If dark red, it's coming from higher up and you need more testing.

Unfortunately, since you have both D and C, it makes it hard to treat your symptoms without giving you the exact opposite problem. Fiber is one thing that can help balance the two out. Also, you can try probiotics. The easiest thing to start out with is yogurt, then work your way up to the pills. They really help some people's D and C and gas problems. You should also look to take gas relief pills when you eat to see if you can help eliminate that gas pocket that you get later on down in your intestines. Peppermint tea is a favorite on here for gas relief as well, but you should not take it if you are prone to acid reflux/heartburn.
