Librax for IBS-spastic colon?

Does anyone have any feedback on Librax. I suffer severly with IBS-D and currently I take hydrocodone which allows me to live a somewhat normal life. However having said that, I can't help but worry about the tylenol going into my body and the dependency my body has. I was reading about Librax being an option for what I have and wanted to discuss it with my doctor but was also looking for feedback here. Anyway, I was wondering if Librax is a better option and if it works. Any help would be appreciated.

Kimb, Welcome to Healing Well :-)

I have not taken Librax but I have heard good things about it. Librax is a mixture of a benzo and an antispasmodic. Benzos are anti-anxiety medications which are good when your IBS is caused or worse with anxiety and the antispasmodic helps relieve the intense spasms in your intestines which is what normally causes the cramping. Please let us know how it works for you.

Hi Kimb,

I have been taking Librax for a year and a half and I love it. I haven't had any serious cramping since I started it. I have Crohn's disease and I thought I was having a flare last spring. After all the test came back inconclusive my GI suggested I try Librax. In the beginning I was taking it twice a day and the pain was gone within a week. They only problem was that I couldn't drag my butt out of bed in the morning. So, since I was feeling better I stopped taken the evening pill. I have been doing it this way now for a year and I feel good. My GI keeps refilling the script for a twice a day dose just case I need it but so far so good, we are both happy with the results and plan to continue it as long as it works.

The only down side I have heard about Librax is dependency. Since I have never stopped taking it I have not experienced it personally.

Thank you for your reply. Its good to hear positive about this medication. I just got it filled and took one so we will see. I understand what you mean about the downside of dependency. I feel like I'm in a catch 22. If I don't take meds than I have no quality of life. If I take the meds I worry about the dependency. I need to live my life so I have to opt for meds. Thank you so much for the reply and hope you continue to do better!

I am on lybrix or generec known as clidinium of a dose of 3x a day. I have at times to take up to 5x and as low as 1x?

The side effects are good/bad

tiredness headache, fry mouth and some more?

For me i am and can stop taking this without fealing any effects, of the syptoms,

I do not know if my body is used to themedication as I have been on this for 10 years on.off

The 1st day I taken this i was eating Fruits like I was a kid again and was very happy, Today i can say why am I taking it does it still work? I am more careful of the foods i eat, and very cautious. it is adiet with the pill.

Thank you for your reply. I believe diet works hand in hand with medication at least for this condition. I've started the Librax a few days ago; 1 x a day and it seems to help with the spasms. However if I need to travel I take hydrocodone because it will stop the 14 trips to the bathroom! I'm trying my best to take note of the foods that seem to aggravate the condition and I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude and also excercise. I say trying because some days are easier than others. I guess we all do the best we can.

To Kim& Road I hope this will be helpful but I have had IBS for 11 yrs
Librax was/ & is the only medicine that helped me. The directions
by my Dr. was to take it 30 min before each meal. I can't cheat and
eat 15 miniutes early; nor even 5 minutes...I also would pay for it
if I cheated and took it late...I often spent 5 days per month
in the ER room with severe abdominable-pain. It is also recommended
to take it 30 minutes before each meal. So if I ate breakfast,
lunch, and dinner I took it 30 min's before each meal=3 per day(ie 1x before
each meal). For me I could not afford the luxuary of skipping it before
a meal...or I ended up in the Emergency room with appendicitis like pain.
Please follow your Dr.'s orders but also know it can be taken safely 3x's
a day 30 minutes before your meals.

I hope this might help somebody
out-there...This is a very disabilitating- disesase for any one to deal with.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's about 11 years ago.  It was under control up until about 2 years ago with Asacol and bentyl/hyoscyamine.  Since then I have been  having more and more frequent attacks of abdominal pain.  They have done 2 colonoscopies and several CT scans.  The tests have shown that the Crohn's is under control, but the pain is still very severe.  I went to the ER last Sunday because the pain was so bad.  The ER doctor thought it might be appendicitis and checked me into the hospital, but the surgeon disagreed and kept me there for observation.  No problem with the appendix and they brought in another GI doc who prescribed Librax.  I've just started taking it and will let everyone know how well it works for me.  Hope you can get some relief too.

It's hard to describe to people just how bad the pain is.  Especially when it can come and go so suddenly.  When it's there it feels like you are going to die and I worry about my blood pressure because it spikes so high when I'm in pain.

I've taken Librax .5 MG for over 20 years with very good results. It is especially helpful when cramping occurs.

My mother suffered with IBS for decades, as did her mother as well. Her son-in-law was a pharmacist and recommended Librax. This tiny pill was the only thing that gave Mom relief. I've suffered with IBS for at least 20 yrs. I couldn't remember the name of this miracle drug. It was my young son who remembered the name, Librax. Mother only took it when she felt the flair coming on, not the way recommended here. I agreed with others who wrote it feels like you are dying. I too have HBP so I definitely have to be careful. I'm prescribed hydro prone for chronic back pain (4 surgeries) but it does nothing for my IBS but slow down my BM's! I take a stool softened every day for that. So now i'm going to my GI doc, it's time for my scopes, and ask for protonix and Librax. Quality of life is what's important! Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I'm 39 years old and I have been having severe abdominal pain (upper area), nausea and diarrhea on and off for 2 years. I saw the gastro doc and he put me on Librax and a strict dairy free diet. He suspects this to be IBS, but because I have weight loss and a history of colon cancer he is performing a colonoscopy as well. I have always had a nervous stomach and it has always responded with diarrhea and loss of appetite under any stressful situation. However there was never any stomach pain. With this pain it hurts to sit, drive or even bend over. The pain is horrendous. I would rather give birth, yes its that bad. It disrupts my sleep, my work, my life, and not only mine but it also affects my family's as well. It has been a rough, rough two years. I am hoping the Librax will help me and that this is only IBS and that I can somehow manage it. I never imagined that IBS could be this debilitating, and/or painful. I'm on day two of the Librax. I took Bentyle for a couple of weeks and it didn't work well for me so we'll see how this one does. My heart goes out to anyone suffering with this.
