Extreme Nausea and lower abdominal pain - IBS?

Hi there, I'm a new member. :-)   I am at my wits end with feeling nauseous almost 24 hours a day (except when I'm sleeping) and I can't eat much due to it.  I have urgent bowel movements, but not daily and definitely urges that lead to nothing.  I am not constipated at all.

I have been put on Dicetel by two different doctors ... to no avail.  I am now seeing a homeopath who is doing accupuncture and I am taking natural anti-nauseant drops (in water) which I sip all day long.

I have had ultrasounds (they found lots of things, but nothing that can attribute to this except an oversized blood vessel on my liver).  I have had x-rays, again nothing.  The pain is now starting to cramp up near my kidneys (mid back) and I can't seem to do anything to alleviate it.  The lower pain is very intense but not always there.  The nausea is almost always there and to the point where I'm unsure who to turn to. 

Due to a family members colon cancer, I have a colonoscopy every 5 years and last one (2 years ago) was clear.  I also have hemrhoids which I've been given a natural cream for.

Does this even sound like IBS ... I don't know what else to do, so went searching and found this site.  Hoping someone will have had the same symptoms and was able to deal with them.

Hi Tracee,

Welcome :-) .  I've been told I have IBS and one of my worst symptoms at times has been the nausea.  I take ginger capsules which work for me.  I buy them at the health food store.  I also make tea using fresh grated ginger when it's really bad.  If nothing you have tried works perhaps it's time for medical intervention.  There are some great medications designed specifically for nausea.  Hope you find relief soon :-)

Thanks for the info.  I am going to see the homeopath this week and will ask about the ginger capsules.  I'm very surprised she hasn't mentioned them to me as she keeps a stock of natural medication, etc.  She has me doing the drops, but maybe the ginger is the way to go.  I think she thought the accupuncture would work and so did I.

I honestly don't know what else I can do regarding medical intervention.  I've seen two physicians and taken myself to the hospital once (where they tried to give me Tylenold 3's and sent me home).    Trying to get into a gastro specialist is a 4-18 month wait ... I've called numerous times (it's been over 1 month since my requisition went through and they haven't even got me booked for my consult).  Where do you turn at that point? 

Well, I'll keep watching for any more advice and I'm very glad I found this website.   Nice to speak to people who have gone through the same thing and finding out what works for them.  People get bored of asking how you are, because all they want to hear is "fine thanks", and I'm to the point of answering just like that even though I'm feeling so terrible I just want to lie down and sleep.

Tracee, where do you live that it takes that long. I have used ginger capsules frequently for nausea. Whether it helps I think depends on what is causing the nausea though my daughter used them for sea sickness.

I know how you feel about people asking. They ask to be polite but really don't want to hear and I can' t blame them. I have had 3 years of various medical problems and I am sick of it and I know they are sick of it even more. It seems I just get over one thing and something else takes over. I think one part of my body gets better and tells the other part, Ok your turn.

I was told that nausea is not the most common symptom with IBS but your other symptoms sound like IBS. Mine was I think an imbalance caused by too much citric acid, I think because once I took the probiotics it balanced out. I still have gas, reflux and bloating but it is not the normal IbS. I have found that peppermint, ginger, fennel capsules are very soothing. Anyway, try the ginger. I am surprised they didn't suggest it either.

Morning

I will definitely try the ginger.  I live in a small town and have to rely on Mississauga Dr's to make specialist appointments and my dr. decided it best to stick with the one who does my colonoscopies.  He advised that if I didn't wait for him and used a different gastro guy then my guy would kick me out of his patient list. 

The pain is almost unbearable at times and so far nothing takes that away.  The pain, if I had to put it on a scale today would be about 9 out of 10 and now my right kidney has just ached all night long.  A,Amazingly enough, I'm not so nauseous ... maybe that's because the pain is taking all my concentration. 

I am the exact same when it comes to having something new pop up everytime I get over something else.  I've wondered about my immune system, but no dr. seems to be worried about it.  This has now affected every part of my life ... my time with the kids, their sports, my work ... I really need someone to get it under control. 

Very painful start to the day and hoping it won't be that way all day. 

Thanks again for the tip.  I'll look into it today if our health food store is open, if not, I'll get the capsules tomorrow.  You never know in small towns what's going to be open or what isn't.

Hi Tummyblogger.  Believe it or not, my right kidney (which is the one that is aching like crazy), is smaller than the left which is normal size.  It has been since I was very young, they're not sure if it was a birth defect or due to the incapacity to function properly the infections caused it to stop growing properly. 

I have decided to call the urologist tomorrow (I had just faxed through the x-ray and ultrasound results to him as five kidney stones - the words for where these stones are make no sense to me - showed up).  Now with this pain, I'm wondering if these stones are passing at a very slow rate causing all this pain down in the lower abdomen.  I'm no doctor, so I don't want to make any assumptions.

Hopefully, he'll be able to see me quickly to find out if there's anything to be concerned about on his part.  We just went through deciding not to remove the kidney unless infections started up frequently again.

I sure hope to be getting an answer on this soon.  Very confused about who to go to and who to trust ... homeopath, family doctor (who is doing nothing), urologist ... it's very confusing to me.  Wish I was more medically inclined.

Anyway, thanks for the "warning".  I appreciate it.
