A dear friend who is struggling with consitpation from IBS and candida was prescribed this drug by her GI doc.  I did some reading about it and the side effect profile is horrendous.  Has anyone heard of or tried this medication?

I've actually heard good things about Amitiza, but I don't know a lot about it.  The side effect profile for any drug tends to be kind of scary - even Tylenol can cause liver toxicity.  But side effects tend to be quite rare, so the benefits may outweigh the risks.

I take Amitiza and i hate it!

i feel like im goin to throw up

and you have diarhea!   and after you take it and you eat something you have to go to the bathroom again!

it is mainly like milk of magnesea i just get really sick and than have diarhea!

I asked my GI about this and he said that personally his patients don't like it. He likes to try other things first like Miralax which I have had success with. He did mention that people did complain about the side effects with it. But others have posted here that it works for them and others said it didn't or the side effects were just too much to bear. It's all about the individual I think. Amitiza is fairly new to the market so like a new car on the market, maybe you should give it a few years to see what problems it may cause.

I think I took Miralax too..is that the powder you put in your drink?? I didnt like that b/c it seemed like the time i took it the next day i would have an urgency to go again at the same time!

Yes, its the powder. Some like it and some don't like it. I like it for the reason that you don't, makes me feel very regular. Also, its quick trips to the bathroom, no longer sitting there for endless times (which sometimes feels like). I put it in my coffee every morning before I leave the house. I have a morning BM and feel less pressure and bloatedness. I'm sorry it didn't work well for you.

I asked because I checked out a message board specifically for IBS folks who are taking this drug and almost 90 percent of the responses were negative.  One woman said she woke up in the middle of the night in a pool of D!!!  Other common compaints were shortness of breath, chest pain, and extreme nausea.  Many of the posters had been former Zelnorm users who were looking for a replacement for that drug.  I had never even heard of Amitiza until my friend told me of her prescription.
