Dicetel

Dicetel (pinaverium) is a calcium antagonist; it inhibits calcium influx into cells by blocking the voltage-dependent calcium channels in intestinal smooth muscle. Sounds interesting - dicyclomine (i.e. Bentyl) is an anti-cholinergic, meaning it inhibits acetylcholine, thereby reducing muscular contractions. That one is one of the more commonly prescribed anti-spasmodics. I would imagine that the effects of Dicetel would be somewhat similar...

We are studying anticholinergics and calcium antagonists in physiology right now - crazy complicated stuff, but really interesting.

My daughter (who'll be only 18 next month) had it perscribed to her today :( Very sad because of course she has to have all the routine tests to confirm if she has either IBD or IBS (as I have both) but the GP asked her if she'd like to try this RX since it will take some time just to get in to get a CT scan for starters, and of course she agreed (can't blame her) because he sense by the symptoms she described to him that it seems to run closer to being IBS rather than IBD (and I know from my own experiance that neither is fun but if she has to have one of them I hope it's IBS and not IBD).

So because my own GI suspected I have IBS ontop of my CD (4 yrs ago) and this RX is new to Canada (last 3 yrs) I thought I'd see how she did with it and maybe even give it a go myself....which regardless of how she does with it I may try it anyways just because we all are so different with how things affect (or lack of) us.

Reason I asked about this drug here is because I don't recall ever seeing a post about it and from the way the GP described how it works and being specifically designed for IBS I thought I'd have heard alot about it here at HW at this forum.

So Have you ever tried it?

It's suppose to help with all types of IBS, D, C and A. Sounds quite promissing, infact I'll have to mention it to my sister and a friend that both suffer with IBS also because I don't think either of them know about it.

Well she's been taking it for 2 full days and says the only thing she notices is she has to work harder at passing BM's sounds a little like she's a bit on the constipated side from taking it which is weird because it's suppose to help with either issue of D or C, but it could just be her system adjusting to it...or it could be he put her on 100mg tabs at 3 times a day when she should maybe be on 50 3/day or 100 2/day...we'll continue to monitor things and I'll update here...maybe it'll do her wonders and then others here that havn't heard of it or tried it can give it a go.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

I began using Dicetel about a yr ago. I use it as directed and for me it has helped. Its not a perfect solution but it really keeps me out of the bathroom with that constant need to "go". I also have had to keep a strict diet as I am gluten intolorent , I have had to remove dairy and after watching the reaction of my body to the "gluten free" processed foods I have removed grain fiber. I make sure I get plenty of veggies, salads, limited fruits as the sugars upset my stomach. I eat most meats that I cook rarely eat out as so many times there are things in it that put me in bed for days. I did try to stop the Dicetel a few months back and within days it was right back to sitting in the bathroom so I keep on taking it. I live in Canada so it was no problem getting the medicine however I am now in the US caring for my elderly mom and its not available here in the US. This journey has been no pleasure and my hubby is very understanding but it can be overwhelming when every hospitality revolves around food.
