At home care after a kidney removal.....

Hello. My name is Cass and in the past I posted on the depression forum. I'm posting here now as I am seeking information. There is a good chance that I will have my kidney removed but I won't know for sure until Tuesday morning the 31st at my next doctor appointment. I have a solid mass on my right kidney, there is urine in the middle of this kidney as well. Additionally, I also have a kidney stone in the right kidney that is too big to pass on its own. The urologist/surgeon told me last week that my right kidney could be removed. I am on my own as my children are both grown and out of state. Once I get discharged from the hospital and come home, will I be able to care for myself? If you have gone through this already, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thanks ahead! Cass

Hi Cass, I don't have any first hand knowledge about this type of surgery. However, I want to let you know this forum is really, really slow activity wise.

Now is a good time to make a list of questions for the next visit with the surgeon as to what you can expect if you end needing surgery. Ask how long you will be in the hospital, typical recovery time given your age & overall health condition. Be sure to stress you live alone, however, I do hope you have a couple of friends or a neighbor that will check on you. Same with diet, be sure to have enough food & water on hand.
