UTI with E.coli

I have had UTI's before and given meds they went away but this time I was having them every 3 weeks after antibiotics was given.....they said I have E. coli this time, and it is scaring me so bad, I can't hardly sleep or eat....my friend tells me most probably I will have to be put in the hospital....has anyone else out there has had this.

E. coli is the most common bacteria causing UTI's. It normally lives in your colon, and most strains are beneficial within the colon. But contamination of the urinary tract can occur pretty easily, especially for women. Most forms are fairly mild, but it may take several courses of antibiotics to clear them up because bacteria in general are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics.

Hospitalization would be needed if you had to have IV drugs instead of oral, and hopefully this won't happen. If you are unlucky enough to have one of the nastier strains of e. coli you might need an IV for a few days.

Thank you Judy2 for the response, I really appreciate the input. I didn't know about E. coli in a UTI, this really caught me off guard.

Welcome to the forum Fall!

Depending on your Insurance, dose, length of time and your doctor you may even be able to do the course of IV meds at home.

However, it sounds like your doc is going the oral route and has everything under control.

It would be a good idea to write down all questions that come into your mind, and ask them at your next appointment. Stress will only add to your discomfort.

Thank you Trina for the input, I didn't know you could do the IV meds at home, I will certainly talk to my doctor about that, you have certainly lighten up the worry a little for me knowing that.

An update on my E. coli UTI ....my doctor just called me and said that the E. coli strain that I have can be cured by taking Macrodantin (hope I'm spelling this correctly) and that my colony count was 10,000 to 20,000, he said that usually a really bad UTI is 100,000 and over....I asked him if it was in my blood, he said no it was not.............so I start my new meds tomorrow....and then go give another specimen in 10 days.....
