Kidney Stones, will the pain ever stop?

My guess here as to why the Dr isn't worried is passing stones of that size or even multiple pieces is traumatic for the urinary system and oftentimes causes small tears as they move down and out and those jagged edges of broken off pieces cause knocks and cuts that can take time to heal. Passing pieces sometimes is more problematic then stone's in their entirety no matter how large.

The bigger problem I would be concerned with is trying to find why you keep producing stones and eliminating that if possible. Sometimes it can be as simple as dietary changes or adding a medication.

Did they not consider lithotripsy at the onset of finding all those stones? It would have eliminated the long process of your body breaking them and passing them on their own as well as stent placement could've prevented any tearing that occurred.

I had kidney pain for over a month after I passed a stone last year

princess, thanks for the post. I guess I must be lucky too...since all previous stones took 1-3 days of excruciating pain to pass into the bladder, then only a few days to a week of sore kidneys after. I guess my kidneys are making up for it now though lol. Definitely very comforting to hear that other people have prolonged pain after a stone.

Well nvrthesame, not sure if it's time to celebrate yet. I was looking at the screen during my ultrasound, and even though I'm not a dr, it was very easy to see the 2 stones still hanging out in my left kidney and I'm pretty sure there are still some little pieces in my right kidney, the ultrasound tech agreed...not working myself up on that one yet though til the report comes back since the first ultrasound said the right kidney was clear. But I didn't really believe that anyway because the right side still hurts.

Can't wait to get my stone reports back. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning haha.

Oh yeah, no dr is created equal for sure. I have been through quite a few dr's in my day, been seeing them since before I could talk. I finally have a good team now..primary care, GI, pain specialist, ENT, heart specialist and for the first time in my life, other than the stones, I've been quite healthy and med free for over 2 years (other than some natural medicine that isn't legal in all states so I'll keep that to myself)...so now I just need a good urologist.

This dr is young and cool, but very dismissive...like most dr's. All he did was try and give me pain meds. Told him the pain doesn't bother me, it's the cause of the pain that I'm worried about. That's when he went on to explain muscle pain to me and how to take care of it. But, I always give these dr's a few visits before I decide. Like my pain specialist, he was dismissive too, til he found out I won't take pain meds...I think he thought I was just seeking pills at first.

What does everyone do when that good ol' back pain comes on and you realize it's a stone passing? I hop in a hot bath and listen to extremely loud music. Then I just sort of zone out and wait. I passed one during spring planting 2 years ago, it took 3 days, was in the tractor planting soybeans the whole time...boy was my girlfriend mad at me on that one lol. I didn't tell anyone til it was over because I knew they would just make me go to the hospital but I wanted to work :)

Oh yeah, probably worth mentioning that I passed another stone/chunk this morning. I'm going for the record lol.

I preach distraction too. I know it's not easy or even possible for everyone but it has worked for me better than any morphine, percocet or dilaudid every did. Also had a bit of a pill problem in my teenage years due to dr's telling me to take vicodin and soma for the pain...so no thanks to that crap...or should I say poison.

Same here, chronic pain since I was a kid. I used to go play with my GI Joes or tractors when I was not feeling well, now I work on my house or play with the real tractors when it comes on. Works like a charm. I just hate being slowed down by my illnesses, it's weird in a way, I feel like crap but that gives me motivation to get up and go do something to take my mind off it.

Breathing techniques to control your heart rate is an amazing tool as well, I use that almost daily.

Oh great, it's always nice to meet other country folk on the internet...it doesn't happen too often. Your family still farming at all?

Oh yeah, bouncing around in the tractor definitely got em going. Farmers and truck drivers are quite susceptible to stones for that reason.

Reports...waiting is always the worst part...Monday can't come soon enough lol.

Will the pain ever stop? Magnesium citrate is used as a cathartic laxative....It provides a soluble form of magnesium which can help get rid of urinary calcium and also has citrate which inhibits stone formation.

two tablespoonsful of mag citrate twice should give you relief from stone formation. Google magnesium citrate in treating kidney stones. you're welcome. Spock would be proud JL
