Nephrologist vs. urologist for kidney stone prevention

I posted before about having a 4mm kidney stone. This was my second stone. I did not like the urologist I got referred to. He was way to surgery happy and you could tell he didn't really care about his patients. Luckily I passed the stone on my own with no problems. Because I chose to follow-up with my general practitioner I am now banned from that urology office which is the only one in town. So I am looking for someone in addition to my GP for post stone care which was my plan anyway.

I have read several places that a nephrologist is better for kidney stone prevention where the urologist is better for removal. Does anyone have experience with a nephrologist? Are they better than a urologist for kidney stone prevention? I have only had two stone and they were 10 years a part. I followed up with a urologist for 2 years after my first one and all they did was an x-ray and urinalysis every 6 months. So I am looking for something more this time.

I myself have had both a urologist and a nephrologist. The bad news is that nephrologists generally only deal with patients that have some type of history of kidney disease. That means that unless you have had at least a kidney blockage from your stone(s), they would have you see a urologist.

With that being said, if you only have one urologist around you, you could always try a nephrologist's office and ask if they will see you. The worse they can say is no.

I'll take my nephrologist over both of my previous urologists and one was the department head of a major group of hospitals. Besides, my kidney doc lets me look through his microscopes too, way more fun!
