While I can appreciate your concerns for your uncle, it appears your uncle is content with his situation. Considering his age why not let him be happy living how he wants to? I don't mean this in a mean way, but let's be honest at 83, if he is happy with himself, I say let him be.
I know someone that was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He had maybe a year to live. He said upon being told the news after leaving the dr office, the first thought that hit his mind was I sure want a cigarette. He said I know it sound crazy to others. My comment was, now is the time to do what you want to do, not what others may expect or want.
