Lupus and Fibromyaglia new to this need help

Hi everyone!

My name is Christy and my sister in law who is 30yrs old was just diagnosed with a severe case of both of these. She was told that from 1-10 she's a 10 as to how severe her case is. She was told she has to do intense chemo for 6 months. Her family is looking into doing Stem Cell Translants in Argentina. We live in Miami Florida and don't want to go out of the country nor do we have the money for it. I

was told it is NOT done in the US.

Can someone help me please? She is very sick and we dont know what to do. I heard of Dr. Burt in Chicago who has a progam you have to qualify for. Does it take your health insurance or is it out of pocket?

Please anyone with info help us? We need to make a decision within a month...she is really bad...

Christy, I'm so sorry to hear about your SIL.  That is horrible to have a case of that severity.  I wish I could help you more on the stem cell transplant questions.  I'm in Canada.  I have no idea what we have here in that case.  I know that once the weekend is over, things will pick up here in the forum and you should get a good number of replies on this.

Thank you very much for responding. I do hear that Canada is beautiful. I hope you find yourself doing well today. I know its a difficult and painful disease...at least it is for her.

Christy . . . That is a LOT to get a handle on. I bet you ARE confused and scared. What exactly is the urgency with your SIL . . . Are her organs affected??? If so, in what way? What are her symptoms?? Many severe flares are brought under control with high doses of steroids and then the dose is brought down gradually to a level that will keep things under control. But I'm not familiar with going right into intense chemo (although Lupus is a HUGE topic and I'm no expert). I know some of the meds used to fight this ARE chemo, but they are usually less intense than chemo for cancer. I hope she is able to get a second opinion. She should be able to get all her labwork together and run it by another rheumatologist. Problem is, it takes a couple months to get in to see many rheumies for a first appointment. I would call around and get another opinion. Just my two cents. I hope she isn't as gravely ill as it sounds . . .. prayers and hugs for her and you. Please keep us posted. Blessings!

Go to the Cleveland Clinic down there in Florida. They have self-pay and financial hardship programs.
