       have 2 pressing questions for now....any special precautions when getting dental work done........Are there any antibiotics one should avoid... could not find the answers so came on here as there is such a wealth of info here...Still trying to come to grips with this lupus disease and not overwhelm myself...Thanks for any help. scool

Bactrim has been associated with flares in Lupus patients. If you are immunosuppressed you may need to be premedicated with atb's prior to any invasion procedures. Judy

If you are getting a regular checkup, usually nothing special needs to be done -- it does, however, depend on your individual condition, meds, and general health. It's usually best to double check with your rheumy before having extensive work -- and also for less invasive work if you flare easily or are already in a flare.

I take Cipro (antibiotic) before every dental cleaning or procedure.  I have to take it because I have mitral valve prolapse. So any heart issues require an antibiotic.  There might be other health issues with lupus that require it too, but your rheumy and dentist will make sure you've got what you need.  You've brought up a really good question.  Hope this helps!

Oh, for your second question.  Anyone with lupus is supposed to avoid Sulpha based drugs.  We tend to be more prone to having an allergy to this class of drug.

        Thank a million for those kind answers as there seems to be questions involving so many things.Does anyone else feel we spend a great deal of time running between consultants etc....how can one conserve energy at this rate?   I have been given the choice...ha...between extraction and root canal and the dentist shipped me back to GP whose info about lupus is not up to scratch...Don't see rheumy until 3 more weeks..The other thing is I'm diabetic and we have discussed medication......did so well on diet/excerise for 9 yrs until this came to be. confused

Check with your doctor.  I was still on 35mg of prednisone and 150mg of imuran and had dental work done. 

My dentist would not do even a cleaning without talking to my doctor first.

Some patients might have an even higher risk and need premedication.

Kanubewell, I SO know what you are talking about regarding the constant back and forth between doctor's visits.  It's crazy sometimes.  This past year for me has been especially grueling.  I had 15 appointments in December and January, and I had 8 in the first 2 weeks of February, before we left on vacation.  I truly feel that this disease has become a part time job.  I don't like that!  I already have a full time job, a house to maintain, and a husband to "entertain".  That's enough! LOL.  We're actually selling our house and moving to the part of the city where all my doctors are to cut down on the amount of driving I'm doing. It's become that bad.  Bad enough to uproot ourselves and move.  Do I sound bitter?  So ya.  We all have issues with the amount of time these appointments take up.  It's hard.  Finding the energy is difficult.  I hope it gets better for you!
