Hello, I just found out that I am about 6 weeks pregnant.  My doctor took me off cellcept about 5 months ago so that my husband and I could try to have a child.  Two weeks before I found out I was pregnant he told us that we need to quit trying and get back on all my meds (little did i know that I was already pregnant). 

Today we went to my Rheumy and he put me on imuran, plaquenil and raised my prednisone to 20 mg.  I am already leaking quite a bit of protein and I am just really scared of the outcome for myself and the baby.  I guess my questions to everyone would be:

What is the normal (SAFE) dosage of Imuran and Prednisone during pregnancy?

Has anyone every had kidney invlovment in an acitve flare and have a safe pregnancy?

Hi Tulip,

I just noticed that there weren't any comments to your question.  Sorry about that. 

Imuran and Prednisone are the safest meds to be on during pregnancy. I have been told that if I ever got pregnant, I could stay on my current meds, which happens to be Imuran and Prednisone.  I don't know what doses are deemed safe and what aren't safe.  But I think prednisone is fine regardless of the dose. Redrose could have some great information for you about her pregnancy and the meds she was on.  Hopefully she sees your posting.

I do know that a pregnancy during active lupus will often present some challenges.  You just have to be really "on things" during the 9 months. You might also be put on bed rest if things get bad. I hope and pray that your experience is a good one.

Hey Amber,

I have no idea what happened to the first reply I made to this topic.  Hopefully I will not have sent two posts to the same topic.

I have never been pregnant while taking Lupus meds, so I do not know what to tell you about it.  I can understand your worries though.  Hopefully someone will respond that can help you more.

I apologize for not responding before.  I really had no advice to give to you about it, so didnt respond to your topic.  but that is no excuse.  I could have given you moral support.

Hi Amber.

Congrats on the pregnancy. I know how you feel when i was that early on i was so scared about the meds i was taking and if it was safe for the baby . but i just had to trust my doctors. I mean they know more then i do.. Right now i am only on 5 mg of prednisone .My high risk ob and kidney doctor said that if i am feeling comfortable i.e no joint pains then i can stay in that dosage. and if there is any cause for concern then they can further evaluate the dosage. And i am on 50 mg of imuran. Both my doctors have told me that these are very safe for the baby. I am not currently taking anyother meds except for a blood pressure medication that is also safe.

Right now i am 13 weeks pregnant and my lupus is in remission and i am feeling very good.. and the high risk ob says that some people even get better when they are pregnant. just depends on the person i guess.

Dont worry because with good prenantal care and with the help of doctors and nurses your pregnancy should go very well. What i am doing is really staying on top of things and reporting anything that is out of the norm to my doctors. =)

Hi Amber,

I'm can relate to you, because i have lupus with kidney involvment..I'm not pregnant .I'm on the same sort of medication, Imuran, i often wondered if it is safe..i did some research, my doctors told me its ok, just need extra supervision..

just follow your doctors,remain postive and it'll all work out,good luck and congrats..
