Lupus and chest pain

Well, I spent 7 hours in the er yesterday and my heart and lungs are fine.  The chest pain was caused by new inflamation in the cartildge around my breastbone.  TX- 125mg prednisone injection (ouch) with a quick taper down by pills.  My kids had a stomach flu and of course it hit me while I was in the er, so on top of being hooked up to every machine they had I was throwing up.  I finally got my discharge, was ready to go home and before I could make it past the final discharge desk, I collapsed on the floor and started throwing up again, which led them to take me back into the er for another 2 hours of IV fluids and anti-nausea meds.  I expected to get the kids' bug, but what awful timing.  Anyway the good news is that heart and lungs are fine and that's all I'm going to focus on today.

Sounds like you needed that iv fluids though. It probably jelped a lot. You need to keep n eye on the inflmation though. Even though it isn't your heart you can still get fluid built up around it.

Jennifer, it sounds like you went through a really rough time. It actually probably worked out okay that you were in the ER when the flu hit you so you could get the fluids you needed. It's good news about your heart. I get the inflammation too and it is very painful and it really feels like heart pain, so it is hard to tell the difference. I'm glad you are home now and I hope you are getting plenty of rest. Take care

Thanks everyone!!!  Feeling a bit better today, still can't eat which is amazing with all the pred I'm on.  Maybe this will be the one time I don't gain weight on pred.  LOL  But boy am I cranky and my kids are driving me nuts.  Thanks again everyone for all the kind word.  God Bless.

I've been sick for a long time but never had any chest pain. Well a month ago, I got chest pain for the first time, along with shortness of breath.
I never go to the clinic or ER, so held out for some weeks to see if it would pass.
It never passed and I went to the ER clinic.
They discovered I had "Costochondritis is a condition that causes chest pain due to inflammation of the cartilage and bones in the chest wall"
I was also wondering if this was common with lupus?

My pain lasted well into 3 weeks.

The pred cleared most of it up, but made me soooooo irratible that I hope I never have to take that high a dose again. It's getting colder and as much as I love it not being so hot, my joints hurt more. My stomach bug is passing, but I still feel a little queasy evertime I eat. Uggh that sounds rough. Good job you were in Er already, sounds like it was the right place for you to be. The stomach flu is the worst thing ever!! I shudder just thinking about it.

I was at my doctors yesterday for my monthly check up and I told her about my chest hurting so much. She checked it out and said everything sounds fine but she thinks I may have inflammation in my chest walls due to an ear infection. I will mention to her the next time I see her about Lupus causing inflammation. I wish my family doctor knew about all the Lupus stuff, it drives me crazy when I have something going on with me from the Lupus and my doctor doesn't know anything about it.

I hope you are feeling well and no offense but please keep the flu bug in your neck of the woods OK? LOL!!! Just teasing ya, well not really but... tongue

Hi Jennifer,

I also currently homeschooling our two boys, 12 and 9.  I am also the president of our homeschool group in South Arkansas.  We have 4 children whom we have homeschooled.  The older two are grown and "off the payroll" hallelujah!  Last year was extremely difficult to get schooling done.  I had gallbladder surgery, then started throwing-up...CT showed hydronephrosis and no dye in R. ureter.  Had hysterectomy, cause uterus was flopping around and possibly/probably obstructing the ureter.  Kept getting worse, but no longer throwing-up tongue !  Finally a dr. did an ANA and it was elevated.  By this time, I felt like I lived in the doctors office.  My boys were so tired of doctors, but they knew how terribly sick I was.  Last winter was horrible.  Finally the rhematologist put me on Plaquenil last August.  I'm feeling so much better. 

Is it hard for you to keep up with everything while feeling bad?  What is RSD? And how long have you been on Plaquenil.  Have you had any trouble on it?

Oh Jennifer, I forgot to tell you...I also have chest pains. The worse the flare, the worse the chest pain.  At first I just thought it was because I was so sick.  When my body gets runned down, there is a heavy feeling on my chest.  But now that I know what is going on, I know it is Lupus related.  Lupus can cause inflamation ANYWHERE in our body. sad    If it hurts when you breathe, it can be inflamation of the linning of the lungs or heart.

HI Kara, I think you were asking the question to me about what RSD is.

It is a syndrome that anyone can get from an injury as simple as stubbing your toe or a splinter. It affects your nerves and causes intense burning pain, stiffness, swelling, cool limbs and pain all the time. I got it from being in a car accident almost 6 years ago. It is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or Refelx Sympathethetic Dystrophy. It hurts all the time and can spread to other body parts. It started in my knee and has now spread to my foot. I am hoping it will stop there and not go any farther, but there are no guarantees.

 

I have been on plaqunell for a couple of years now and I have no problem with it at all.
