Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but not new to lupus.  I was pregnant in 1995 and unfortunately lost my daughter to pre eclampsia.  She was tool tiny to save. They took her at 24 weeks.  Well I got acute kidney failure from it.  It has been a long road but finally my creatnine is a steady 1.0 .. I still have protein in my urine.  Found out two days ago I am pregnant.  I just wanted some of you with lupus nephritis to share your story of pregnancy with me.  Also, does anyone know of natual remedies that assist in protecting the kidneys?  Thank you.  Look forward to meeting with everyone!

Welcome Lilmiss, Sorry about your baby . . . so sad. I don't know much about lupus issues and pregnancy . . . I'd had my kids (4) before I realized. I've never had organ involvement though. But there are some here will tell you all about their pregnancies and what meds they were able to take. I just wanted to welcome you. . . and offer one little prayer for your safety and the health of your baby! Blessings!

I don't have any advice to offer you in regards to your questions.  I don't have any kids, never will! I also don't have kidney involvement.  I'm a HUGE help aren't I, LOL. turn

Hi Lilmiss-
Congrats on your pregnancy! Im not sure of any natural remedies but I did want to mention that following a renal diet (low potassium, moderate protein, etc) would be a good idea. I wasnt sure if you were doing so already. Also, you should check your bp every day. HTN affects the kidneys, too. You can also buy strips at the pharmacy to check for proteinuria, too. All good things (im sure you know) to keep tabs on when preggers. They check when you go to the office but it might give you piece of mind to check at home. Be careful with herbal remedies because they can interact with meds and may cause harm to the fetus. So make sure they are ok with pregnancy. So many people forget to check those things because you can buy herbs OTC.

I am not on a low potassium or protein diet.. since my kidney function was 98%.. but is there a website or book you can point me to so I can be more informed on how to safely do that?  Thank you so much for all the advice, SNICKERDOODLE- have you had a successful pregnancy with lupus nephritis?

I dont have any kids (yet). Im 26 and in nursing school (LPN 1 more year til RN). Ive also worked at the local hospital for 5 years, and kidney patients are common on my floor. I have protein in my urine on and off but my BUN and creatinine are fine. I only suggested the renal diet because of the pregnancy. Your creatinine is at a great number, but pregnancy puts strain even on healthy kidneys. You have extra blood flow and toxins to filter from the baby so your kidneys work alot harder. If you type in renal diet tons of stuff come up. I would check "renal diet with pregnancy" because the baby needs the protein to form properly and you dont want to take out too much. Maybe you could see a dietician/nutritionist? Most hospitals have them. They should be able to give you guidelines to follow if you explain your situation. Maybe your rhemie or kidney doc has some advice? Your OB probably has no clue! I wish I had more help for you!

I don't have kidney involvement with my lupus, and I wasn't officially dx'd with lupus when I had my daughter. I did have a kidney infection when I was about 14 weeks along, and spent a few days in the hospital because of it.

Now looking back it's possible that my lupus was the cause of the infection. I wish I could steer you in a specific direction but I can't. I just wanted to welcome you and say congrats on your pregnancy. Looking forward to hearing updates on your journey to having your baby.

I don't have kidney involvement but I had a baby 6 months ago. I developed severe edema and blood pressure problems but never progressed to pre-eclampsia thanks to careful care and bedrest. A baby asprin every day can help prevent pre-eclampsia in pregnant women with lupus according to my high risk specialist and rheumy. It is safe for the baby too. make sure your meds are okay for the baby with a reproductive geneticist and stay on what they say you can and switch to other meds for stuff they say you can't. I would see a kidney specialist for a consult if you don't have one and see yours if you have one so they can help you decide how to try and prevent a repeat of last time. I am so sorry you lost your daughter. I lost 2 children after they were born myself. My son is 6 1/2 months old and doing beautifully and despite a flare I am doing okay myself- it was my best pregnancy ever but I was in remission when I got pregnant and for most of the pregnancy.
