does lupus run in families???

Hi all

 

I'm still waiting to see the specialist to find out whether or not I have lupus but I just found out that my niece (who I haven't seen in years) was diagnosed with Lupus about 5 years ago. She's doing really well. Happily married with 2 boys & a full time job. 

I realise Lupus is not hereditary but was just wondering if it runs in families.

I've read that they believe Lupus to be hereditary through the maternal side of the family. Unfortunately, I was adopted and have no medical history on my birth mother's history. I believe that it is general autoimmune conditions. Say someones grandmother had Chrohns, then an Aunt had RA, a sister had Lupus and you could be totally healthy. You never know how it might work out. But I have heard there is some kind of genetic link. You may want to try and Google it.

When I went to my rhuem. the last time I told him my Dad has luekemia. He wanted to know what type. I told him CLL and he said there was my link- there is a genetic relationship. I had no idea that the 2 were connected.

Hi Tibby,
I had an Aunt and a cousin with Lupus on my dad's side of the family. I just hope none of my children or grandchildren get it.

Hey Tibby! Since this month is Lupus awareness month, the Lupus Foundation of America is sending out Daily Facts about lupus. Daily Fact # 13, from the Lupus Foundation says

"Only ten percent of people with lupus will have a close relative who already has lupus or may develop lupus. Some people with lupus also will have a relative who has lupus or another autoimmune disease."

No one knows what causes lupus. Scientists think that people are born with the genes to develop lupus and that something brings on or "triggers" the disease and symptoms. However, a combination of genetics (heredity), environment, and hormones is involved.

Note "scientists think" means that there are no official studies to prove or disprove this statement, and basically the answer is "we just don't know".

Some of you may observe trends of auto-immune diseases in your families or friends families, but until I see a study otherwise, I'm trusting the Lupus Foundation!!
