I know the doctors say that lupus affects mostly the small joints, but does anyone have it affecting any of the larger joints or the spine?

In over 10 years with joint pain from Lupus, I have never heard this. I consider my hips, knees, and shoulders to be large joints, and they are quite involved, esp. my hip. I do have smaller joints as well -- feet & hand joints.

Lupus can and does attack any joint in the body.  For that matter, lupus can attack any part of the body.  Fortunately it does not attack everything in everyone.  One of my initial symptoms was joint pain....every joint in my body.

I had this discussion with my rheumy last week. She says its effects the feet, ankles, knees, wrists, hands, fingers and hips. It does not effect the back, or neck. She says that pain in me is from the scolosis, bulging disks, arthritis of the spine ddd etc.

Lupus arthritis has primarily affected my feet, hands, shoulders, elbows and hips.  Osteo-arthritis has ravaged my back and knees.  When I flare, it can affect a few joints or sometimes almost all of them.

so when "we" flare do the joints actually look swollen? ive flared 2x's in the last 3 days, gone to the ER and the on call doctor said my joints werent swollen!!! So what was I flaring from? I have fibro but could it have been a fibro flare? UGH what to do!!! He gave me a steroid shot and a shot of morphine for the pain and on home I went only to get another painful flare the next day!

My left knee looks swollen often. It's obvious when you compare to the right knee. I don't know if I would be able to tell if they were both swollen....unless I had skinny bird legs...which thanks to previous steroid script..I do not.

Generally the joints away from the spines are affected.
