I've developed an issue with my right knee. When I climb stairs it hurts at the knee cap. I go down the stairs and it hurts all over if I lead with it. If I put most of my weight on my right leg I will feel a slight pop and it will hurt on the outside of my knee.
I told my rhuemy about it hurting when I climb stairs and all he said was joint pain is common with lupus. He didn't even look at it!

Is this common or should I get a second opinion? confused

Sorry to hear that you're having knee issues. My knees hurt all the time and have for years. It's always been put down to my lupus flaring up and they've done nothing about it. My Rheumy has looked at my knee and has given me a steroid injection into, which help for a bit.

I know you weren't happy with your Rheumy and was going to get another one. I'm sorry I can't remember did you manage to get a new one? If so, and it's that just kinda blowing it off I'd wait a bit and see if it settles down. If this is your first Rheumy that you don't like than I'd vote for the second opinion.

Good luck with this and let us know what you decided to do. You'll be in my prayers.

I don't see the new rheumy until Feburary 2014.
I put my brace on my knee and trying to rest it.
I wanted to start walking for weight loss because I'm getting too fat, but this knee issue is driving me mad. I have to climb steps to get in and out of my house...three in the front and eight out the back where I park my car. I can't park out front.

Hope you get some relief and some answers, Joy. I've been having knee problems for years. My rheumy did xrays a couple years ago and all that showed was osteoarthritis.

I also walk for exercise and oddly enough - the knees rarely bother me while walking. But when it's time to climb the 3 porch stairs to go inside after I'm done, the pain is extremely bad. I also have enormous trouble on bad days just getting up from a chair, never mind getting to the basement to do laundry. Can't decide whether it's just knees or knees and hips. There is pain and a lot of weakness.

Having similar trouble in one elbow. I've been told it's all tendonitis numerous times - which is all a part of the fun, I guess, but I think it does coincide with other flare symptoms more often than not. And every once in awhile - I barely have any pain at all there. Confusing.

Let us know what you find out - hope it lets up in the meantime!

Hi Joy,

      I have knee problems which have become worse with Lupus.  I get both inflammation for the Lupus and pain from Osteoarthritis.  I also had three meniscal tears, which I had arthroscopic surgery for this past summer.  That helped the right knee pain a great deal.  I also learned some great exercises from a physical therapist for strengthening the muscles around the knee and that also helps.  Like you and others, walking is great, but I tend to have the pain walking up and down the stairs.  I would consider a referral to physical therapy to see if you could get some relief.  Hope things are better today.

I went to a PT years ago when my back went out totally. It took about four months of two times a week to get normal again. She noticed my knees were weak then and had me do some special exercises for them. I guess I need to try them again.

Asked my primary doctor about my knee and he said I had arthritis. :/
Throw another symptom on the bar-bee.....sigh......

So sorry about the arthritis DX. It seems like it never ends doesn't it. I certainly feel for you, my joints all of them ache terribly. Maybe the exercises will help strengthen your knees and you'll get some relief from them.

Did your primary offer up any suggestions as what to do about your knees? I know I wear those heat wraps you can but over the counter around my elbows and knees. The heat really helps the ache and seems to make it easier for me to move them.

I hope you start feeling better soon and hang in there, we all understand how you feel.

He told me to brace the knee when it's flaring. I've got plenty of heating pads for my knee. He mentioned me taking anti-inflammatories but kidney doctor says no NSAIDs.
I'm going to buy stock in those portable heat wraps. I'll own the company after all of this.
He said if it keeps hurting and swelling he's going to send me to an orthropedic for surgery evaluation. Ugh!
