Lupus and Discoid Lupus

I was wondering if it is possible to have Systemic Lupus and also Discoid Lupus at the same time. I have begun to break out with a almost round red scaly blotches. I have one on my face and one on my hand. I have tried putting lotion on them and also antibacterial creams and they will not go away.

Has anyone had these before? I have an appointment with my Dr. on Monday but was just wondering what you all thought.

I get those scaley patches on my scalp and my eyebrows. I'm suppose to see a dermotologist soon to find out what's happening.

Joy, I guess we are kind of in the same boat. I am hoping my doctor will send me to a dermotologist, too.

My daughter has discoid lupus and no cream will take her rashes away except for fluocininide ointment, a heavy steroid. Her doctor said that about 10% of people with systemic lupus have discoid as well. I hope your appointments go well!

Hey Mary Ann:

So sorry to hear about the SLE and Discoid Lupus too. That's a real bummer and I hope they are treating it for you. I just found out this summer that I have Lupus Profundus (or Lupus Panniculitis (sp?)) This is of the skin too, according to my Dermatologist it shows that my SLE isn't quiet and I need a different treatment to get me all better.

Of course my Rheumy doesn't necessarily agree with my Dermatologist and they've been disagreeing about my changes in my skin and body. They can't even agree on which medication to give right now. Finally, though they've now agreed and I've started my new medication.

Mary Ann, I'll be praying for you and I hope that whatever medication they give you for your Discoid lupus gets better really quickly. Keep us posted on how you're doing okay. Happy New Year to you and I hope you start to feel better really soon.

Thank you Ladies for the information, concern and prayers. I am seeing my primary doctor tomorrow to get a referral to the dermatologist. I will let you know how it goes.

Well, I went to my doctor and he said that I have excema, not Discoid Lupus. He has given me a steroid cream to use. I sure hope it helps because I am getting another one on my face. :-(

I certainly hope it is excema, but my daughter had to see several dermatologists, who also said excema, before she was diagnosed with discoid. They did a biopsy finally. So, what I would do is really keep your eye on it and see what happens. Where is your rash located? Discoid would most likely be on places in the sun most. Face, chest, arms. Oh, I just saw in your initial post your face and hand. Just keep watching and see if it happens after you've been in the sun more. And if the creams don't work because they are not strong enough, and it keeps happening, I would ask for a biopsy. Give it a little time though.

Thank you Ashaline for that Information. My doctor did say if it doesn't go away we may have to biopsy it. He mentioned skin cancer, too. So I am really hoping it goes away with the steroid cream. I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
