Hi Everyone,

I normally post in the anxiety/panic forum, but I have a question for all of you. I recently went to the doctor for other reasons, but mentioned some upper arm muscle soreness and joint pain, so my doctor decided to do an ANA and ESR tests just to check. My ESR was normal, 8. However, my ANA came back positive at 1:160, speckled. Any thoughts? Thanks!

That's on the low end and you can have positive ANA and not have lupus. The rheumatologist must follow a checklist of eleven indicators to diagnose it. You must have at least four out of the eleven. The list can be found in the thread called Lupus 101.

I just had this too but mine was 1:80 and it said homogeneous. I am worried but thinking maybe it's from UC meds. I do have terrible fatigue and I had lung inflammation. I don't know what we are supposed to do... My doctor didn't mention anything. I think we should probably retest. Good luck.

From what I understand, there is a subset of the population that has a positive ANA who are completely healthy. Your Dr. will have to decide if it's of clinical importance or not and if you have symptoms. Some people have disease symptoms and negative blood work. Auto immune diseases are so frustrating to try and understand.

I too have had a positive ANA mine is 1:160 homogenous. I have been so lost on trying to figure out if i am healthy and just have the positive ANA or if i actually have something going on. I have however been tested 3x and every single time it has shown up positive.

A positive ANA simply helps the Drs know what direction to look IF you have other symptoms that are inconclusive. If you don't have other symptoms, it isn't anything to even think twice about.

Think about it like you would a bruise. If you have funny blood work or other symptoms maybe the bruise means something, but if you don't, then the bruise is just a bruise.
