So my daughter has discoid lupus. We are also fairly certain that she has mono. I found a lot of things that said that using extra virgin coconut oil helps to get rid of mono very quickly. I read testimonials from like a 100 people. I started giving it to her today. But I think I remember reading at some point that people with lupus should not take this. Does anyone know about this, or have any information on this? Something about not wanting to boost their immune system or something like that. I am doing everything I can to help her. She has had a very sick year. She keeps picking things up. Thank you!

The problem with lupus or any other autoimmune system is not that the immune system is weak, it is misdirected. Cause is still debated but is thought to be a combination of a set of genes that predispose the immune system to misdirection and then some sort of a trigger that produces the symptoms. The last thing needed is an amped up immune system. Many of the current treatments suppress the immune system which creates another set of problems: increased susceptibility to infection and cancer. Newer treatments approach it differently but there is no single treatment that works for all cases and suppression is generally the first line of treatment particularly for severe cases.

Coconut oil has been purported (in the Philippines and more recently the western world) to have health benefits for centuries as well as an anti inflammatory effect. Like all holistic treatments there is little science to support the claims of those trying to sell their treatment. I would personally not consider taking coconut oil a risk unless the patient relies on it as a primary treatment for a serious case of lupus.

Make sure your daughter is being seen by an experienced rheumatologist who is familiar with treating lupus. If she has dietary or other general health problems those should be addressed as well through diet and lifestyle changes coordinated by her doctor.

While I don't have Lupus, I would urge caution on diet changes, if your going to try this then do so very slowly and ask your daughter physician. Coconut oil might cause extreme diarrhea.
I'm all for diet changes but they should be done slowly, so not to cause problems such as diarrhea or other ills...
I do know that as a parent we hurt, when our children hurt and it can be harder for us then our children. My own daughter has Aortic Stenosis (Congential Heart Defect) and had open heart surgery at 12 days old, which was about 24 yrs ago and Thankfully she is doing good today, but still needs to see cardiologists for monitoring, so I do know some of your pain, but like Bill said you should coordinate your childs care with her doctor, even diet changes...
Some doctor's are all up for diet changes and can give you doseage amounts, other's not so much...

You could try honey, as long as she's not allergic to it, just a little bit per day might help. And it wouldn't be an extreme diet change. I also recommend beeswax soap (not body bars). Honey and beeswax have tons of healthy properties.

Try cleaning/sterilizing her toothbrush after each use and switch to a new toothbrush when she's feeling better.

I use it for psorarsis (sp) sorry cog fog. It works wonders. It also helps for my fatigue. It's a must in my arsenal. It certainly can not hurt. It's a food.

Well I am addicted to coconut water it has helped me with the mouth sores and ulcers is antiflamatory and very refreshing. I dehydrate very easy and my potassium goes down fast so the coconut water replenish all the nutrients that I loose. I use the oil to cook but I heard that is very good also. It is natural is not going to hurt to try it but also do not stop taking the medication is very important the rest is like an aid for the illness, good luck I will pray for your daughter I hope she gets better.
