I was diagnosed with discoid and subacute cutaneous lupus in 2006. I'm a 38 year old home builder/ ex-sun worshiper. When I got the news I was like, what am I going to do now. They put me on plaquenil and told me to apply cream to the rash. I tried using different sunblocks, but any prolonged period in the sun would cause a flair. So I quit taking the plaquenil for years. I couldn't enjoy anything outside. Always looking for a shady spot or avoiding activities altogether. Cutaneous lupus can really get you down, but I tell myself it could be worse. After a recent checkup with my rheumatologist I decided to try to do something to at least buy me a little more time in the sun. He suggested I go from the usual 400 mg of plaquenil/day to 600 mg. That freaked me out so here is what I did. I started taking the 400 mg of plaquenil, a multivitamin, fish oil, DHEA (not sure but I don't think ladies should take this one), and most importantly Red Light Therapy. I started everything simultaneously while I had a moderate SCLE flare on both arms and upper lip. Also a discoid lesion by my ear (which never goes away). After 4 days the SCLE rash on my arms had completely disappeared. I mean gone. It's the red light therapy I'm sure of it. Google all the benefits of it. The results for me have been unbelievable. My skin feels alive and healthy again. I actually hung my arm out of the car window the other day ( I usually try to hide my arms). After 20 days my lip is 90% healed. The discoid by my ear looks better than it ever has, although it is still slightly scarred. Your local tanning salon or planet fitness probably have the red light therapy beds. It's like a tanning bed but it uses infrared light instead of uv. I have had 0 negative side affects and my skin is very sensitive to the sun. I don't know if it will work for everyone but for me, I'm ecstatic. I couldn't wait to share the news. Also it's important to use a sunblock with both mexoryl SX and mexoryl XL. Look for it online it's not sold in the US. I got mine on ebay. Vichy is the brand I got. After my arms had totally healed to 0 rash. I put my new sunblock to the test for an entire day of yard work followed by an entire day by the pool. That's right. I said by the freakin pool. Not a single spot of a flare. I feel like a new man. I hope this helps.
