Difference between SED rate & C-reactive protein

That is strange. Both of mine were elevated last time... SED rate 30 and CRP at 20. I thought is was strange that my SED rate was slightly elevated and my CRP significantly elevated now that I think about it. I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Mine both are high sed rate around 50, and crp around 17.

Both of these tests measure general immflamation. There are no specific answers they can get from either beside that there is immflammation somewhere in the body.

A sed rate measures how long it takes for some sort of blood component to reach the bottom of a test tube. The longer it takes the higher the result. Because it measures blood components, and your blood pretty much replaces itself every 3 months this measure immflamation in the last 1-3 months. This is elevated for more chronic immflammation usually, like RA.

A c-reactive protein is a protein excreted from your liver. This test measures immflamation in the last 12 hours.....

So Jeannie your elevated CRP could simply be anything from cramps because of your period to a sore throat from allergies to the starts of a flare. But that is good that your sed rate is lower, it sounds like they may be on the right road to finding some pain relief if they havent all ready.

Im kinda wishing my CRP and sed rates were low. I've been dealing with sinus infection that went right into my lungs and was put on a pretty big dose of steroids that tapered off after two week. the out come every joint hurt and then started running crazy fevers up to 103. I went to urgent care and cuz the office was closed they did all the normal tests. CBC CMP and a CRP. Come to find out my CRP jumped from 22 to 145.10. It has been in the past as high as 203, 190. I have also had SED rates as high as 120. I was diagnosed with TRAPS this is an inflammatory disease. It can attack your kidneys. heart, lungs, intestines skin joints. i sent message to rhuematoligist and i will find out tomarrow 10/12/15 if he will be admitting me. Has anyone had levels this high?

There are no specific tests for lupus other than testing for antibodies. Even if those are positive it does not mean you have lupus. SED and CRP tests both indicate inflammation in your body but neither are tests specific for lupus. These labs help the doctor tell if you have an active diseases but by themselves are non specific as to the cause. Elevated SED can be caused by many things and CRP is often associated with cardiovascular disease. I also have polymyositis and many patients with PM do not register high SED rates but usually have high rates for another test called CPK. But some patients only show higher CRP. These labs are useful but are far from an exclusive diagnostic tool.
