Any info on Pain Centers, plz...

My Gyn Dr, said he might send me to a pain center, is this a good idea.  Does anyone one know what happens there? My stomach pain is really bad.  I had a CT scan done, I forgot to mention it to him and he  didn't mention it either. They CT'd stomach and abdomen. He is going to send me a specialist out-of-town, to get a 2nd opinion re: if surgery will be needed re: ovarion cyst.  My GYN dr has had me do 3 blood wrks, to chk for cancer,.w/in 2 1/2 mos, is normal? (he requested it be done asap his assist. told me).

I felt so dumb in not remembering about the CT scan results. This was the whole purpose for the appt. 

Ive had the memory problem, like many of us probably have, but since Jan 07' when I call to make my appt, they give me the date and time, I been writng the wrong dates, this has happen 3 -4 times. Yesterday, as my hubby was driving I asked him 'where is the Dr's office?', its like I felt so spaced otu all of a sudden.  I'm glad I wasn't driving.

Another thing, when the meeting w/ DR was over, my husband asked me 'do you have anthing else u want to ask the DR?, I said no. My hubby knew we were there for the test results. Today, i'm thinking maybe my hubby and DR talked b4 he came into the room w/me.  Maybe the Dr. didn't want to say anything neg. frm test reults, if any, due to my 8 yr old, was there. (at last min. baby sitter couldn't watch her, this why I brought her w/us.  Sorry just talking so much, but this is makin me wonder, I will have a talk w/hubby tonight.

I'm thinking if something is wrong , hubby don't want me to stress, and we will find out more frm a 2nd opinion.

I have never been to a pain management center but it doesnt sound like a bad idea. I believe the mind and body are very closely intertwined and when one doesnt feel right the other cant work to its fullest capacity.

From what I understand pain management centers work on the physical and emotional aspect of pain. I think it is important for your team of dr's to work closely with the pain management center so everybody is on the same page. If nothing else it may give you a sense of control and that alone can make you feel much better I think.

I think most dr's dont try and shield anything when it comes to results. If there is something you need to know they usually tell you regardless of who is with you. If nothing else they may ask that your daughter wait in the waiting room while the adults talk.

I dont think a 2nd opinion is ever a bad thing. I hope things are well!

Sunshine, I really hope there is no bad nees and that the doctor is just being thorough. I don't blame you for being worried though. I've never been to a pain center, but I have heard good things about them. From what I've heard they use a combination of both medicine and coping skills. Keep us updated on what you find out. Take care and I'll say a prayer for you.

Hi Sunshine, I'm sorry that you're going through so much now and that you're in alot of pain. My pcp referred me to a neurologist who took mri's of my spine because of constant pain and numbness. I had surgury about 3 years ago and had a discetomy w/graftw/fusion/titanium plate and pain in my lower back. I have two herniated discs at L4,L5, S1. I've been referred to a pain management doctor/center. I was put on medication, given an electronic muscle stimulator(tens)unit for pain and sent to physical therapy. I go once a week now. I can't say enough positive things about the center. I can walk without a cane now, my posture is improving which is making my pain better. It's so nice for a change to go to a doctor who understands pain and doesn't think it's in your head. I would talk to your pcp for a referral if you want to see one. I'm sorry you're going through so much. I hope that your Doctor isn't keeping something of real importance from you. I think that getting a 2nd opinion might be a good idea.

As far as pain clinics go, I've been to several. The doctors work with both drugs and lifestyle changes. They can do some procedures to help with chronic pain. I hope that you get a referral and have great sucess with them. Wishing you the best always, take care and keep us posted.

Hi,

I saw a Pain Management doctor briefly, just to get a series of lumbar epidural steroid injections but I went there from a referral from my rheumy. I didnt know it was a PM before I went, though...I just knew he was an anesthaesiologist who did the injections. So I only went there 3 times to get the shots & that was it. But now I'm having some other issues and severe pain and my podiatrist told me I should be seeing a PM for all my pain and he was going to give me a different referral & I totally forgot to get the name (I guess he forgot to give it to me also). Ahhh, but I also forgot to ask him if I should still be doing any ankle exercises...so I know what you mean about forgetting! My pain now is just not going away & I can't even get any sleep anymore....so I think I will consider going to a PM for this reason. I do know that the first one I saw for the epidurals had me sign a contract that I could not go to any other doctors to get any sort of pain meds....I guess that is due to some people doing the doctor shopping thing who try to get narcotics for addiction or whatever..

Thanks for all the replies, I have a referrel on 4/5/07, I'm praying all will be good. My GYN cont'd my state disability for another 3 mos, he had put per Loma Linda Hospital, on form. I hope this will help my ssd process as I'm waitng for reconsideration since Jan 07'
I also have some very good news to share!!! My hubby was hired permanetly frm the co. (some of u may already be familiar w/our story re: the accident he had). He is the 1st amputee to be hired on. Im so proud of him. He is such a nut, lol, when he came frm wrk last wk, he said I've got some good and bad news, he said the temp. agency is laying me off. I then started to hug him, told him you will find another job- as I was starting to console him more, he says 'But I'm getting hired permanetly w/a raise'. He is such a clown.

Even though his arm is amputated he is still a very happy man, everywhere we go he makes someone smile.
Like this one day, he was just opening my door on the car (like he always does), these 2 ladies commented 'what a gentleman he is, we don't see that much these days', He's always been a gentleman to me.

I just wanted to share this y'all, thanks!!!

That is so cute about your husband. My husband does the same thing, he opens the car doors, restaraunt doors, etc. I guess we found some really good men! Thank the Lord for that one! I'm glad to hear the good news even though I've never talked to you before. I hope you get control of your pain really soon! Good luck. Jyllian
