Hi, 

I just wanted to throw out a question however I'm not sure if its Lupus related or not or some other kind problem.  I have noticed that my hearing is deteriorating which is very scary for me as I'm in my early 30's.  I have a problem understanding what people say unless I am within a few feet and I can read their lips for backup.  I at first thought it was people and that they didn't talk clearly; but I noticed that other people can hear fine what I have trouble hearing (actually understanding the words more than the actual hearing of them). 

I get occasional high pitched tones in my ears and I also sometimes get what feels like a pulsing in my ear (left ear only) although not like a heartbeat but like a wind sounding pulse and sometimes is irratic like morse code or something (not consistent) - sorry very hard to describe.

Does anyone else have problems with their ears or hearing that is related to Lupus or any other connective tissue disease or autoimmune problem?  I think this is something that I should probably get checked out soon.

When I am having a mild flare day from some minor stress or something, my eyesight gets a bit fuzzy and so does my hearing. My rhuemy says it is from the inflammation we get when we flare. Mine is very clearly related to how I feel overall, and is not yet a concern as it never lasts more than a couple of days. You might try tracking how the rest of your body feels on those days when you hear the high pitched or pulsing tones...maybe it relates to inflammation like mine does. Take your temperature, see what your rheumy says. However, if the hearing loss seems to occur all the time, I'd definitely be marching off to the Ear-Nose-Throat guys!

HOLY COW!! You hit the nail on the head! YES! I thought everyone was mumbling and get frustrated because I need to be face to face,and tend to turn my head so the ''good''ear is facing them. The pulsing-that just about drives me out of my skull!Mostly mine is like a heartbeat-soo annoying! I get different pitches of ringing and sometimes it just aches inside,yet they look and say,nope looks good-have the ringing right now actually-which co-insides(sp) with the rapid eye movement(back and forth at lightening speed -ooh,little dizzy now). this bites! morse code,LOL,never thought of phrasing it like that,good explanation though,I know what you are talking about. I try to explain to explain that to others and they look at me weird.

Hi Des,

   I have had constant ringing in the ears 24/7 for the last 7 years. I'm almost deaf in my left ear and the ringing is louder in that ear. Mine started when lupus attacked my equallibrium and damaged it. I hope you see a ENT soon and get this checked out. Hopefully this will get better for you. Let us know what you find out. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Lynn, Crystal, and Babs... I think I will call an ENT today and make an appt just to be on the safe side. I don't feel like I'm in a flare right now, although I'm not 100% but I don't think I'm ever 100%. I started getting pains in my glands under my ears so I'm not sure if its related or not or something else. Its so frustrating because if I was a healthy person and something wasn't right, I would know things weren't right and it probably would be an easy answer and an easy fix; but since I've been ill it seems like the possibilities of what could be wrong with me are endless. Sorry for the rant. (((HUGS)))

I have had ringing in my ears for over 3 years. Doctors never have been able figure out why. I pass all the hearing tests. Just another thing I have to live with.
