Article on UV clothing

Hi Everyone. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution newspaper had an article "Many UV Claims Fail Basic Tests" on May 19. Testing was done by Good Housekeeping and 2 brands failed: Sunveil claimed its cover-up blocked up to 97% UV and Solarveils tunic claimed 90%- both garments had a UPF of zero. "Clothes you can count on" include tropicwear shirt from L.L. Bean, beach shirt from Coolibar, exo dri pointelle V t-shirt from ExOfficio, venture pants from Outdoor Research and a performance knit T-shirt from Land's End. Most garments made from synthetic fibers and in a tight weave will give you good protection. Tight weave is a must.

I agree!! Its good to know that clothing companies are taking the step to reduce damaging effects from the sun. Thanks Donna for the info!!

RIT makes a good product which you put in your washing machine. Very inexpensive and it lasts for twenty or so washes. It's called "Sun Guard" and can be found in some stores which carry Rit Dye, or ordered online. Also, Solumbra is a reputable line of sun protective clothing but it is pricey....also online www.solumbra.com. Covering up is a nuisance, but necessary !

Did the article mention anything about the RIT Sunguard?

I love it - just re-treated several items today. Easy to use, if used correctly it doesn't discolor the items, and it lasts well.

Even so, I usually use sunblock UNDER the sleeves of the treated shirts.

I am a faithful user of the Solumbra products and Sun Precaution products. I have been using them for 7 years and I live in Florida. I could not survive without them!! I even have my husband wearing some of the shirts when we ride our motorcycle.
