I read somewhere about Lupus and teeth

Has anyone had to have teeth removed due to bad teeth from Lupus. While getting them done has dinist ever made a remark about a root.

I'm just wondering. I had 5 teeth removed last Weds. and my dintest made a comment about one of the roots but my mouth was numb I couldn't ask him "What about the root?"

I still have 8 more to go uptop and then we are going to work on having the bottom done. I know there's a flaire coming.

Hi Veronica and Hairspray (welcome Hairspray!!) Yes, Hairspray is right, w/o a good supply of saliva, our teeth can rot. I had some real issues with rapid plaque buildup despite regular flossing and brushing and when I started taking Salagen (for dry mouth & eyes), my dental checkups went much better and the amount of plaque was more normal. The dentist and hygenist were actually very surprised and very interested in the salagen rx. I also use a mouthwash and toothpaste called Biotine which is very helpful for dry mouth as well. Audrey Ann . . . yes the Salagen is a prescript ion . . . I was prescribed 3x per day dosing. I could actually feel the saliva return w/i 30 minutes of taking it . . . amazing. I was not dx'd with Sjogrens, but he said it was a possibility. That rheumy went straight for the symptoms and didn't worry a whole lot about the dx. I really think he liked to keep the medical record free from red flags. I hope you've been well. Blessings!

Hi veronica, rosie and hairspray are totally right. I have sjogrens kind of bad and one day I had four molars just break off all at once and had to get four emergency root canals, not pleasant. I never noticed I had a dry mouth, but always had stains and tartar. I went on evoxac, a newer version of a salagen type drug, and now my teeth are whiter, much less tartar build up and my gums are healthier, everyting better. I was taking too much and I was drooling really bad at nigh and my hair was soaked and my pillow. Had to cut out the night doseage. Anyway, I've had alot of salivary glands removed, all right and all left, just parotid in the middle left. They swelled up and effect my speach and were blocking my breathing at one point. I've been better off without them and I guess you have thousands of tiny salivary glands so you don't have to worry too much about losing them. I've had stones too and tried to pop them with my finger nails, not a good idea. Docs have a wire they can get the stones out with. The initial and still best test for sjogrens (besides a lip biopsy) is the schirmer test where they put a strip of paper in each eye to measure the amount of moisture you have. Didn't think mine were that bad, but they were. A gallium scan showed the inflammation in my sinuses (chronic sinus is also part of it as is bowel problems due to lack of moisture in the gi tract) and lacrimal glands to be much much worse than what was thought due the schirmer test. I recently had another tooth break. Mostly they break when they have old dental work, fillings, bonding etc. so its important to keep that stuff up to date. Take care. I have had quite a few removed in the few years. On two of them they were so gone that a piece of the root broke off and still is in my gums and or jaw. But the dentist said they may or maynot start to push themselves out and if they do they might cause some pain.
