I was so sick of dissecting brains tonight that when I came home, instead of burying my head in a pile of books, I did a little research...turns out that the anti-thyroid drug I am taking for my Grave's disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism), PTU, has had the effect of inducing a lupus-like syndrome - complete with renal disease - after a short time on the drug. Yeah, I e-mailed the study to my doc. Wouldn't it be ironic that a lowly medical student discovered the root of her own problems? That'll make 'em burn :)

Wow, Sarita!  Good digging for that information!  If it is the medication, it could very well be that you have drug induced lupus.  As soon as the medication is discontinued, the lupus goes away!  That's the only type of lupus that is "cureable". 

 

I think that's awesome you discovered that!  Well, get on the phone to your doctor asap.  The sooner they can get you off that, and onto something else (pick a drug that is in a totally different family to this current one), then you will hopefully feel so much better!

 

Keep us posted okay. I'm really interested to know how this turns out for you!

I can't add anything to what Ginny and Rosie said except that I hope you fire the doc who put you on that in the first place and didn't realize what the lupus might be due to!

Hi Sarita,

I hope you have found the answer to your health problems. I know you have been sick for some time with horrendous diarrhea and now this, so it would be nice to have good health for a change. You might be (in your words-a lowly medical student) now but someday soon you will make a terrific doctor! Keep us updated on your health and have a great weekend.

Thanks everyone, I've got the kidney ultrasound in a week so maybe that will elucidate something. The medication is one possibility among a bazillion others, but my PCP and I agree that all of this (the diarrhea, weight loss, electrolyte imbalances, proteinuria, what-have-you) are probably related. I have been reading some VERY interesting journal articles lately but of course am not in the position to self-diagnose, so am leaving all that up to my docs. In the meantime I am just forging ahead in school and trying not to think about it if I can possibly help it! Your support has been much appreciated and I will keep you updated :)
