Is this email I got a joke or what?? Aspartame and Lupus?

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

However, I must add that I have had bad reactions to aspartame -- it invariably gives me a headache and once gave me hives. I believe we had a discussion about it some time ago and several people said it didn't agree with them. There is certainly no harm in trying a personal experiment and stop aspartame intake for a while and see how your body reacts!

is it only in diet soda drinks? I dont use regular sugar, i use splenda, and the bad part is for people who will see that email, they will tell people who have lupus and are uninformed about it that it is the reason that they are sick, which can be very hurtful to us lupies when we really know that truth.

Its best to avoid ALL artificial sweeteners.  My mother has suffered serious CNS effects from Splenda.  We have filed an adverse reaction report with the FDC.  I have terrible problems with Aspartame and Saccharin.  Headaches, and a weird out-of-body feeling. 

Artificial sweeteners are in so many things.... yogurt, snack cakes, cereals, breads, juices... these are just the tip of the iceberg.  Another really BAD substance is high fructose corn syrup and all of its relatives (found in regular soft drinks) The AMA has reported a link in its use and the spike in diabetes these past decades. 

I dont know what the answer is, except to stay as close to the food God intended for us as possible.

does that mean we cant eat or drink anything? i have been using splenda for a while now and equal before that until my mom told me to switch, i dont think i have problems with artificial sweeteners and stuff like that, or maybe i do and i just wrote it off as something else. well i see my wonderful pcp in a week and my local nephrologist in two weeks so i think i will asked both of them about it. and just in case i will ask my transplant doc too, i see her next month (as i am typing this sounds sarcastic, but i swear i dont mean it to be). because no doc has ever warned me about it? hell they have never even asked me if i use artifical sweeteners. so maybe no using them anymore will do me some good. who ever found this bless you. take care all
