Question about flares?????

Hey everyone,

I got sick with a really bad soar throat, chills, and a fever on saturday. Today I've noticed that most of my original symptoms are gone but have felt soo exhausted and achy that i could'nt even get up this morning to call in sick to work (again). I've missed monday and tuesday which is a big no no at my work nono . My point is since Im still so new to Lupus and everything it does im wondering if im in a flare?? My chills, soar throat and fever are all gone but im soo drained. Im wondering if this could be the flu or a flare?? I do plan on going to go work tomorrow. I had to take care of my 13 month old daughter the entire time I was sick so I think going to work might be a vacation!! eyes Unfotunately I don't see my new pcp until may and my rheumy until june so I still have quite a wait in front of me. Also when ever anyone with Lupus gets sick do you always go into a flare??

Natalie, I think a lot of us can have trouble telling the difference sometimes between the flu or a flare, since the symptoms can be similar. I've had trouble telling the difference too in the past. I do think that when us lupies get sick, it's so hard on our bodies that our lupus is more likely to flare, so I think you are probably right. I wish you didn't have to wait so long to see your docs. If you don't start feeling better soon, please give them a call and let them know what is going on - they might try to get you into see someone. Hang in there - all of this can be a lot to deal with, especially when it is all new. I really hope you start feeling better soon. Take care

Hi Natalie,

   I agree with Hippi, its hard to tell sometimes when we are flaring or just have the flu. I hope you will call your doctor and let him know whats going on soon. Maybe you can nip it in the bud if it is a flare starting up. Please keep us udpated and take care. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Natalie.

When I get sick with something, even as benign as a cold, it almost always triggers a flare for me. Anything that triggers our immune systems has the potential to trigger a flare. My flares feel like a horrible case of the flu.

As for work, if you are officially diagnosed, or even if you arent but have a good rheumy, you might want to look into filing FMLA where you work. This will protect your job if you have to be out for any amount of time with your illness, even a few days. And, I have found that employers are much less likely to give you grief about your illness if you have that on file.

I sure hope you feel better soon!

I'm sorry that you're in a flare and feeling poorly. The others have basically described how a flare feels. I always feel like it's a huge case of the flu when I have a flare up. Of course I've several other problems that affect how I always feel too.

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and to say, if you're not feeling better in the next day or so, I'd call your doctor. I hope this flare leaves you soon. Looking forward to hearing your feeling better real soon.

Hi there :-)

I have been diagnosed for about a year now, and I have SO much trouble in figuring out what is what.

I STILL really dont know! But.. I do know, the last time I got sick it caused a flare. I was dealing with both and not knowing where one started and the other one ended.

My rhuemy gave me a short course of prednisone and it helped a lot.

I do wonder if I will ever figure all of this out!
